Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

The objective of this study cycle is to offer a solid training in a scientific and technical perspective that ensures the future MA¿s in Environmental Engineering adequate competencies to project, develop, monitorize, coordinate and control public and private management and environmental assessment programmes and processes. Those competencies, duly enframed by a comprehensive and integrated vision of the development and by the scientific method of analysis of the products' and services life cycle include innovative working and decision-making ethodologies applied to the resolution of environmental problems; ability to organize teams in a constructive and participated way, and ability to critically analyse and to self-learn. The specific competencies to be developed by the students throughout this study cycle include: the application of analytical techniques to the surveillance of environmental pollutants; the development of eco-compatible products and processes; the identification of physicalchemical processes resulting from environmental or ecological stress situations; the assessment, reduction and surveillance of the environmental aspects and impacts of economic activities and technologies, namely in terms of eco-efficiency and energetic efficiency; the acquisition of qualifications to perform the environmental assessment and management, water supply project and management, residual water treatment, waste, ecosystem and promotion of the natural patrimony, hydric resources, air quality and sound environment, soil and territory ordainment. We also intend to develop competencies that enable the students to develop and participate in research processes, namely through the design of projects by resorting to the choice of observation units, their assessment, data collection methods and their analysis; as well as to intervene in the business milieu with abilities to innovate, start new businesses and activities in national and international contexts.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

At present, the activities of the environmental engineers extend to the most varied areas and fields of social interest, ranging from politics to technology, economics and management. There are very few specific fields or sectors of the economic activity that presently neglect the positive contribute of Environmental Engineering to their progress and development. This Master Programme aims to train specialized managers by facilitating them specific technical and scientific competencies to intervene at the different levels and contexts in the classic domains of environmental engineering, in componais, State and autharquies and in international or regional organizations, such as the case of European Union, European Environment Agency or the Community of Portuguese Speaking countries (CPLP). In fact, there are very few social and economic institutions that lack environmental engineers.

  • Infrastructure and Equipment

    Infrastructure and Equipment

The Universidade Lusófona has the appropriate structures for the development of this programme, with a specialized library whose opening hours cover, fully and without interruption, the course's working hours and with access to a database, particularly in the field of biotechnology. The Universidade Lusófona's laboratories have the equipment, facilities and human and material resources necessary for adequate performance of the proposed Masters. Laboratory classes will be taught in existing laboratories. Laboratory activities are separated in different laboratories with different advantages and characteristics. The facilities include: Laboratories clearly suited to the field of Chemistry, in which work is accomplished within the subjects in this area, without involving any biological material. Laboratories devoted to Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, in which bench-scale work is carried out which involves biological material, emphasizing again the existence of a small pilot-facility for the manufacture of beer.
