This is a graduation program leading to the Master's degree in Civil Engineering. It is structured according to the Bologna Declaration and has a normal duration of two years (four semesters, 120 ECTS). The course is organized in two optional branches of specialization (i) Construction and Structures and (ii) Construction and Hydraulics. The syllabus comprises a set of 12 common curricular units, present in the two branches, called Common Backbone, and three other specialization curricular units. The first three semesters intend to give students scientific knowledge in the field of civil engineering; the fourth semester is dedicated to the preparation and public discussion of a dissertation or a project. The program is composed of highly qualified and experienced faculty members, both in research and in industry, capable of covering different aspects of a Civil Engineering professional in their branches of specialization. The research activities are incorporated in the Civil Research Group (http://civilresearchgroup.ulusofona.pt) and are focused on four research areas: Structural Health Monitoring, Hygrothermal Behaviour of Buildings, Construction Materials, and Sustainable Road Infrastructure Materials and Design. This group is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 9.

    Who is this course for?

Undergraduate students holding a Bachelor¿s degree in Civil Engineering. Depending on CV and scientific background, students holding other degrees may also be accepted.
  • Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

The master¿s program aims to provide knowledge and understanding capacity to: Deepen technical and scientific knowledge learnt in the undergraduate program of civil engineering; They constitute the basis of developments and unique applications, especially in a research context; Apply knowledge, understanding, and problem solving in new situations and unfamiliar, in broad contexts and disciplines related to their area of study; Assess situations and decision-making capacity, to integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities that constrain such solutions and these judgments, or resulting from it; Improve the communication skills, allowing to transmit information, share ideas, discuss problems, and propose solutions; Learn throughout life in a self-oriented and independent way.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The aim of this master's program is to graduate students in specialized areas of Construction and Structures and Construction and Hydraulics. Depending on the specialization, the program intends to give technical and scientific knowledge in the areas of designing of concrete structures, design of water systems, design and maintenance of road infrastructures, building information modeling, and sustainability. These goals are intended to provide specific technical skills and to give students the possibility to continue the academic journey, providing scientific knowledge necessary for the subsequent frequency of doctoral programs.
  • Career Opportunities

    Career Opportunities

Civil Engineering in the areas of Construction and Structures and Construction and Hydraulics
  • Future Studies

    Future Studies

The technical and scientific knowledge gain in this graduate program will allow students to continue their academic career, providing, in particular, scientific knowledge necessary to attend a doctoral program.
  • Infrastructure and Equipment

    Infrastructure and Equipment

The master's program has access to the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and a dedicated office for students with computers. The current infrastructure, equipment, and software permits one to carry out experiments in monitoring of structures, mechanics and material resistance, building materials, structural analysis, hydraulics, soil mechanics, and communication routes.

    Research

The research activities are incorporated in the Civil Research Group (http://civilresearchgroup.ulusofona.pt) and are focused on four research areas: Structural Health Monitoring, Hygrothermal Behaviour of Buildings, Construction Materials, and Sustainable Road Infrastructure Materials and Design. This group contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 and related SDGs 12 and 13, by promoting sustainable and resilient infrastructure through the introduction of new technologies, materials, and innovation intended to facilitate efficient use of resources and guarantee the safety and comfort of people.
  • Observations

    Observations

Students can carry out research funded by ongoing R&D projects and to spend a short period of time in research centers located in the state members of the European Union, under the Erasmus Program. Students may also visit other researcher centers outside the European Union, under specific research projects (e.g., Brazil, United States, and United Kingdom).
