    Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

    Skills to be developed in the study cycle: i) The skills to be developed by students represent a constant teaching concern that deals with the interdisciplinarity inherent in the epistemological definition Science of Religions, and even more important seeing that a significant part of the students attended the first cycle in another area of knowledge. Furthermore, the student in the second cycle in Science of Religions should be able to do research in the religious phenomenon field, using different methodologies of the Social Sciences and Humanities. ii) They also represent the student¿s ability to dialogue and to respect, which exist beyond the beliefs and religious practices of each and everyone. Seeing the work of the religion scientist is increasingly more important, through the study of movements and current phenomena, the researcher should be able to escape the constraints of his upbringing or faith. This exercise is the key to the legitimacy of a science that, as in this case, implies the comprehension of the present, the field where prejudice is greatly developed; iii) To achieve these skills of dialogue and respect, students must acquire the minimum skills in research around key religious phenomena and the principal methodologies of Social Sciences and Humanities. Operationalization: The operationalization of these objectives is reached by: - Interdisciplinary teaching practice (curricular units that are not based on a single approach); - Programmes of curricular units that foster questioning and not the sum of content; - Field trips to places of worship; - Meetings with leaders and religious communities; - Participation and organization of debates; - Participation in scientific research. Level of compliance: The measurement of compliance is achieved through the following instruments: - Survey of compliance of objectives by teachers and students; - Preparation of the annual report that is delivered to a Monitoring Committee for review and opinion. Monitoring Committee: To monitor compliance with the objectives, a Commission was created which aims to give advice and prepare suggestions on the operation of the course. This committee is composed by: - Tim Jensen, secretary general of the International Association for the History of Religions; - Frank Usarski, director of the PhD program in Religious Sciences at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de S. Paulo; - João Duque, director of the PhD program in Religious Studies from Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Luis Salgado de Matos, Coordinating Researcher of Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa; - Francolino Gonçalves, sub-director of Instituto Bíblico Arqueológico de Jerusalém;
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The creation of this study cycle fits in with recent international dynamics that led to the creation of the European Association for the Study of Religions (2002) affiliated to the International Association for the History of Religions -IASR). This 2nd Cycle in Science of Religions by ULHT received great influence when it welcomed the Secretary-General of IASR in 2007. The formulation of this course is intended mainly to research on the multiplicity of religious phenomenon, in a total freedom of research and respect. This course appears as a response to the need to train researchers with special tools to work with religious issues not pertaining to the confessional scope. The 2nd cycle in Science of Religions by ULHT is the only one with these aims in Portugal: a total religious exemption. Thus, we assume as a fundamental objective the development of an academic community dedicated to this study, diverse in religious terms, but always with a scientific approach.
