The 6th Mapping the Magazine conference will be held at Lusófona University in Lisbon, Portugal, July, 2nd and 3rd, 2020.

‘Mapping the Magazine’ is a series of conferences established by Tim Holmes of the Cardiff University School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC).

The conference aims to create an intimate meeting of international magazine scholars from many disciplines (Media and Communications, Journalism, Gender and Cultural Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, English, History, Visual Communications, and so on) who are interested in exploring the current state of magazine research and possibly developing collaborative research projects.

The papers will be delivered sequentially over the two days, not concurrently in separate streams. Conference delegates are asked to commit to attending all papers.

Our keynote speakers this year are James Hewes and Joy Jenkins.

James Hewes is the President & CEO of FIPP, a global trade association whose membership comprises 700 enterprises, including nearly 60 national magazine associations. Hewes was a Publisher and Head of International at BBC Magazines and then Publishing Director for Top Gear, Good Food, Easy Cook and Lonely Planet Magazine and a Director of BBC Haymarket Exhibitions.

Joy Jenkins is Assistant Professor of Digital News at the University of Tennessee. She is also a research associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. She has a particular interest in local media and magazine media and worked as a copy editor and reporter at an alternative newsweekly in Oklahoma City and as senior editor at a city magazine in Tulsa. Her research focuses on the sociology of news and her work has been published in multiple academic journals, including Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, Journalism, and Feminist Media Studies
