Pharma 4.0 - Digital drives Smart Manufacturing

Pharma 4.0, the extension of the fourth industrial revolution to the pharmaceutical realm, promises to deliver a productivity leap across key focus areas: drug discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing. Pharmaceutical manufacturing has the goal to provide quality medicines to patients on time. There are several steps involved in manufacturing medicines including warehouse operations, quality control, production and cleaning, with companies having to follow strict guidelines enforced by regulatory agencies.
Industry 4.0 technologies can help Hovione improve its internal supply chain service level, by establishing virtual production, quality and logistics operations that connect existing information systems and allow for added visibility into transactional process data, that is then turned into actionable information that enables decision support systems.
Hovione designed a strategic roadmap to embrace novel technologies and set the bar for a new paradigm of smart manufacturing. Knowledge Management, Data Science, IoT and Robotic Process Automation are key to the success of the digital strategy and will act as a catalyst of operations and a differentiating business factor. In this spirit, I will detail Hovione’s approach by presenting some of our initiatives: from data-driven models to digital factory simulation.

Andrea Costigliola is a professional in the Pharmaceutical Industry, with experience in Data Science, Process Modeling, Robotics, Simulation and Optimization.
Currently working as Data Science and Digital Systems Lead at Hovione, Andrea defines the technological strategy and supervises the implementation of robotics and IoT solutions, data-driven models and decision support systems for R&D and manufacturing operations. Invited Professor at the University Lusófona de Humanidades e Técnologias, teaching Decision Support Systems and Advanced Architectures for Computing.
