Industrial Microbiology in the context of biotechnology: Introduction. The phylogenetic classification (mRNA) of Carl W oesse and its importance in industrial microbiology Microorganisms with industrial interest and their products. Selection and breeding of strains, choice of raw materials, growth conditions and metabolic regulation. Primary products of microbial metabolism (biomass, amino acids, solvents, enzymes, organic acids). Secondary products of microbial metabolism. Applications of other microbial processes. Monoclonal and catalytic antibodies; vaccines; biotransformation, biolixiviation, biosensors, Environmental Biotechnology, biodeterioration of materials and their control and industrial wastewater treatment. Ability to solve the problems that are put in an industry at the microbiological level, which means to optimize the production systems. Laboratory skills related to various production processes and microbiological control of final products.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
At the end of the CU students should understand the importance of industrial microbiology and its connection to the economy, not neglecting the integrated systems of quality, environment and safety management. Skills, at the laboratory level related to various processes of production and microbiological control of intermediate and final products. 3. Ability to solve the problems that are put in an industry at the microbiological level, which means to optimize the production systems. 4. Record, report and interpret the results of the experimental work.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
Expositive method using audio-visual, interactive method and research work. The practical component comprises several practical works where several real cases are studied and concrete problems are solved. Written work on a production process based on a biological matrix with application complemented by an oral presentation with discussion The set, composed by written work and oral presentation, will have a quotation of 0 to 20 values, of which 70% are associated with writing and 30% to oral presentation and discussion. A grade of 10 or higher is required for approval of the curricular unit
