Sound Effects Workshop I

Presentation

The discipline Atelier de Sonoplastia was pedagogically defined and structured in order to transfer a set of theoretical-conceptual and practical references regarding sound production in the context of audiovisual communication. The theoretical contents include aesthetic and semiotic concepts associated with the articulation between sound and image as well as references associated with the physical properties of sound. Practical sessions of sound recording (exterior / interior), editing and mixing favor the acquisition of skills in the fields of audio production and post-production for cinema.

Recommended complementary curricular units

Not applicable. But, due to the approach associated with some theoretical contents regarding the physical principles of sound, graphics analysis and audio technologies, some logical-mathematical effort may be required to understand some concepts. In this way, basic knowledge of physics and mathematics is recommended.

Syllabus

  • Perspectives of audio discourse in audiovisual communication;
  • General notions of acoustics: spectral characterization of movie theaters and calibration of stereo and surround systems;
  • Digital audio: signal conversion systems, interfaces and communication protocols;
  • Audio and encoding formats;
  • Sound technologies: studio equipment: equalization, dynamic and effects processing;
  • Microphones: mono, stereo and multichannel ¿foley¿ techniques;
  • ADR - dialogue replacemente
  • Editing, assembly and mixing techniques in AVID Pro tools;
  • Dynamic normalization techniques in dBFS and LUFS (EBU R128);
  • Sound design: overlapping sound structures and synthesis (subtractive and spectral);
  • Sound restoration techniques;
  • Application exercises (video trailers and applications in an audiovisual context);

Objectives

The discipline has as its general objective to favor the development of skills in the design of audiovisual materials, with specific reference to the techniques of audio production and post-production. The discipline also allows to develop and enhance creativity, either in the capacity to innovate and deepen applications derived from the latest audio technologies, or through the ability to critically analyze communication strategies and the role of audio discourse in cinema. Throughout the proposed program, aspects associated with the mechanisms that allow the articulation of sound / image and the acquisition of skills in the consolidation of sound narratives will be studied using audio editing and sound design applications.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

Theoretical sessions of oral exposure using multimedia technology through the projection of powerpoints, audio and video support equipment. Editing and mixing applications are made available in the classroom as well as recording equipment. Some supporting documentation in digital format will be made available through the ULHT e-Learning platform (Moodle) and via class email.

Written Test (35%), Continuous Assessment (25%) Cross-Sectional Project (40%);

Only students who have attended 75% of the planned classes will be successful, except students who have the status of working students. Additional weighting factors can be assessed according to parameters such as attendance, punctuality, interest, participation and overall attitude in the context of class and / or teamwork.
