    Emphasize the importance of the role of History in current results. Underline the importance of cultural relations between countries and continents, with special emphasis on the Greco-Roman matrix of Western culture, but without forgetting other North African influences closer to the time and history of the Iberian Peninsula. Refer to the importance of the Enlightenment and the results of the French Revolution. Also highlighting the more international currents of modern architecture, but trying to show how they were appropriated and reinterpreted in Portugal.

    1. Brief review of the characteristics of Portuguese architecture from Romanesque to Baroque. The importation of English neoclassic in Porto and French in Lisbon. The Portuguese appropriations
    of neoclassical and romanticism. Iron and eclectic architectures, art nouveau and art deco. The intersections of the various styles. The phenomenon of «Portuguese House» by Raul Lino.

    2. Estado Novo architecture in the context of its counterparts of European totalitarian regimes. Modernism and international style in Portugal. The different Portuguese authors of today. How to intervene contemporaneously in the "old".

    Objectives

    Understand Portuguese architecture in the context of the learned influences it receives from abroad and the way Portuguese architects reinterpret and adapt them. Familiarize students with the latest typologies, contemporary formal currents, and how these scholarly author forms have influenced the common architecture of an unknown author.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Classes will consist mainly of three complementary strands. On the one hand, expository sessions will be held by the teacher of the subjects of the course, duly accompanied by audiovisual material. On the other hand, readings of fundamental texts will be carried out with the students of the theoretical themes under study, in order to promote the collective critical debate. Finally, the development of the students' work will be monitored throughout the semester, through discussion and guidance with the teacher.
