Class Foundation of Landscape Architecture

The UC is governed by contents related to the architect's activity in the field of landscape architecture, relating and reflecting on its various domains: from historical and theoretical to projectual and operational; from the artistic and phenomenological to the technical and constructive.

- The concept of landscape and its disciplinary transversality.
- Notions of natural landscape, humanized landscape, rural landscape and urban landscape: Significant events in the field of landscape.
- Case studies and visits: Ex. Gardens and Gulbenkian building.
- Architecture, art and landscape: interdisciplinary relationships.
- Walking as an aesthetic practice.
- The notion of expanded field: Landscape, Land art and Installation.
- Landscaping in the West and the East, past and present.
- Relationships between landscaping, architecture, urban and territorial planning.
- Identification and characterization of different types of landscape at different scales in Portugal.
- Most common tree species in Portugal.
- The teaching and practice of landscape architecture in Portugal. Examples.
- Design methodologies applied to landscape configuration of different scales and typologies.
- Application of sensitive and phenomenological analysis methodology in landscape architecture proposal.

The teaching methodology is based on the combination of theoretical-practical classes framing the syllabus with a view to acquiring theoretical and methodological knowledge within the scope of the landscape architecture project.

Presentation of theoretical research papers: group work.

Study visits and viewing of documentaries.

Practical classes for carrying out exercises with tutorial guidance aimed at acquiring technical and operational knowledge that allow a critical analysis applied to concrete examples or the development of landscape projects: individual work.
