This unit aims to give students the basic legal knowledge necessary for the exercise of their future profession, particularly in regard to principles, regulations and procedures directly related to urbanism and building.
As such, and taking the nature of the profession into account, this knowledge is intended to enrich the training (skills) of architects as a means of guaranteeing the provision of a high-quality public service in accordance with the expectations of society.
The students must also acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for the development of plans, projects and programs that, in addition to being adequate to the respective legal and regulatory framework, take into account the fundamental questions of environment and heritage preservation and the necessary integration between scales, sectors and shareholders.

Objectives
Objectives
The curricular unit of Urban law and building regulations has as central objective to provide a comprehensive framework of concepts, principles and the legal and regulatory matters involved in the thematic areas of urbanism and buildings. It also aims to communicate basic knowledge on procedural issues, on the role of public administration.
Finally, it is intended to sensitize students to the legal aspects present in the exercise of their future profession and the need to ensure the integration of scales, sectors and stakeholders in the development of plans, projects and programs.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
This unit has lectures and practical classes. The lectures will be taught with multimedia support to illustrate the proposed contents, encompassing the analysis and review of relevant legislation, as well as the underlying principles and concepts. Debates on the proposed themes will be encouraged. Practical classes are aimed at monitoring a practical exercise done by the students, in which they will apply the knowledge acquired and test the proposed methodologies.
