Class History of Portuguese Architecture I

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The curricular unit of History of Portuguese Architecture I focuses on the critical analysis of the role of architecture and urbanism in the transformation of the national territory, in response to the broad issues of modernity. We seek to understand the transformations in Portuguese society, in their relationship with the international context, and the role that architects and urban planners played in responding to architectural, urban and territorial challenges. This understanding of modern and Portuguese architecture is structured based on its determining historical moments, summoning the main figures and works that mark these transformations. The knowledge acquired in this unit makes it possible to bring students closer to the Portuguese reality and its more specific issues, in the continuity of the History of Architecture courses with an international scope from the previous stage of the Bachelor.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

The curricular unit of History of Portuguese Architecture I aims to give a critical perspective of national architecture in modernity. The objective is to cross the knowledge already acquired from the history of international architecture with the history of Portuguese architecture. It is intended that students acquire knowledge about the main Portuguese architects and urban planners and about the reference works of architecture and urbanism in national territory. It is sought in the unit that students relate the architectural and urban production with the theoretical approaches of architects, establishing the links between the fields of the profession and the discipline. Finally, as the national territory is the most direct field of action for future architects, the fundamental knowledge about Portuguese architecture and urbanism becomes instrumental in responding to the challenges that arise in this connection between society and discipline.

Classes will consist mainly of three complementary strands. On the one hand, expository sessions will be held by the teacher of the subjects of the course, duly accompanied by audiovisual material. On the other hand, readings of fundamental texts will be carried out with the students of the theoretical themes under study, in order to promote the collective critical debate. Finally, the development of the students' work will be monitored throughout the semester, through discussion and guidance with the teacher.
