Class Neuropsicologia do Ciclo Vital

  • Presentation

    Presentation

Neuropsychology is the science and practice of evaluating and understanding brain–behavior relationships and providing recommendations for intervention that can be implemented in the daily lives of persons when brain dysfunction compromises functioning at home or school, on the job, or in the community at large.

In recent years and within this field of knowledge the effort to provide an integrated view of neuropsychological function and dysfunction from early childhood through adulthood and, where possible, old age, to support the understanding and consideration of the role development plays in the presentation and outcome of neuropsychological disorders across the lifespan became crucial.

    Syllabus

S1. Fundamentals of clinical neuropsychology throughout the life cycle (child, adolescent, adult and elderly).

S2. Neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g. learning, hyperactivity)

S3. Neuropsychological syndromes and acquired brain injury (e.g. traumatic brain injury)

    S4. Neuropsychiatric disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder)

S5. Neurodegenerative diseases and dementias (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease).

  • Objectives

    Objectives

OA1: Understand the human developmental cycle

OA2: Understand the role and contributes of clinical neuropsychology for assessing and treating neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychological syndromes, neuropsychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and dementias

OA3: Recognize main neurodevelopment disorders, neuropsychological syndromes, neuro-psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and dementias

OA4: Know the incidence, prevalence and course of the main neurodevelopment disorders, neuropsychological syndromes, neuro-psychiatric disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and dementias

OA4: Develop critical reasoning around the cognitive and functional implications that may arise from these disorders

OA5: Apply and integrate the theoretical knowledge in the conceptualization of specific clinical cases, namely by developing competencees in differential diagnosis

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

The articulation of the teaching methodologies this CU  is intended to promote a balanced synergy between theoretical and practical teaching methods, by encouraging active and autonomous learning of students.

Therefrore, the oral presentation with the support of audiovisual materials (TM1) will foster the acquisition of relevant theoretical knowledge. This methodology will be articulated with the in-depth analysis of case studies (TM2) that reflect changes that may occur across lifespan (Neurodevelopmental disorders, Acquired brain injury, Neuropsychiatric disorders, Neurodegenerative diseases and dementias). TM2 will be complemented by teaching methodologies such as interactive dialogue (TM3) and small group discussions (TM4).
