This intensive course has been designed for veterinary surgeons and veterinary students who wish to develop their skills in digital imaging and avian surgery, combining clinical reasoning, technical expertise and decision-making based on real-life cases. With a highly practical and results-oriented approach, the course will explore current methods and surgical strategies applicable in both companion animal practice and in the context of exotic and wild birds. Throughout the course, participants will develop a structured understanding of digital avian radiology, master proven techniques and refine advanced surgical approaches to the coelomic cavity.
  • Main reasons for choosing this course on ULusófona

Main reasons for choosing this course on ULusófona

    • Significantly improve diagnostic quality: You will learn to acquire and interpret digital avian radiographs with greater accuracy, reducing technical errors and increasing confidence in your diagnosis.
    • Master the barium series as a decisive tool: The gastrointestinal contrast series can completely change the clinical course of a case. This course teaches you when, how and why to use it strategically.
    • Develop a structured method of radiographic analysis: Instead of relying on intuitive interpretations, you will apply a systematic reading protocol capable of identifying subtle changes and differentiating between complex pathologies.
    • Increase confidence in abdominal surgery: You will acquire practical skills to approach the abdominal cavity with greater control, reducing anaesthetic, haemorrhagic and post-operative risks.
    • Gain confidence in advanced reproductive surgeries: Procedures such as oviduct removal and oophorectomy will no longer be seen as a `last resort¿ but will become part of your therapeutic arsenal, performed with confidence and sound judgement.
    • Raise your level of professional distinction: Avian medicine requires specific skills that not everyone masters. This course enables you to position yourself as a better-prepared professional, technically distinguished and capable of managing challenging clinical cases.

Technical and professional skills that I will acquire

1- Mastering the Technique of Digital Avian Radiography Participants will acquire the technical skills to produce high-quality digital radiographs through: - Correct and reproducible positioning - Appropriate adjustment of technical parameters - Minimisation of artefacts - Standardisation of projections This ability helps to reduce diagnostic errors and significantly enhance the clinical value of the radiographic examination. 2-Interpreting X-rays in a Systematic and In-Depth Manner Rather than simply `looking¿ at the images, the course teaches participants to analyse them critically. Trainees will learn to: - Apply a structured reading protocol - Identify subtle changes in the coelomic silhouette - Differentiate between gastrointestinal, hepatic and reproductive pathologies - Recognise patterns consistent with masses, ascites or organomegaly This skill is essential for improving diagnostic accuracy in avian medicine. 3-Using the Barium Series as a Strategic Tool Participants will develop the ability to: - Select appropriate cases for comparative study - Apply safe administration protocols - Interpret the different stages of gastrointestinal transit - Incorporate the findings into the treatment plan This ability transforms the barium series into a decisive tool in complex clinical situations. 4-Performing Laparoscopic Surgical Procedures Safely The course will enable you to acquire the technical skills to: - Plan and prepare appropriately for a coelomic surgery - Choose the best surgical approach - Handle delicate tissues with precision - Control bleeding in highly vascularised structures - Minimise intra- and post-operative complications This is a key skill for enhancing surgical safety in birds. 5-Performing Advanced Reproductive Procedures (Salpingectomy and Oophorectomy) Trainees will develop the ability to: - Correctly assess the surgical indication - Perform step-by-step removal of the oviduct - Apply safe oophorectomy techniques - Manage complex cases based on real clinical profiles This competence enables trainees to intervene with confidence in challenging reproductive pathologies.
