Class Audiovisual and Film Creation Workshop II - Documentary

The course is the entry level into the knowledge and experimentation of the documentary genre, and will therefore address the fundamental subjects of a theoretical and practical introduction.

In the practical component of the course, students will make, in small groups, a preliminary film exercise followed by a short documentary, which have complementary objectives in the use of aesthetics, techniques and procedures that are specific to the conceptualization and production of documentary.

Characteristics and language of the documentary. Introduction to the Modes' theory (Bill Nichols) as approaches to the documentary form.

Notions of point of view, approach, representation, characterization and dramaturgy, work ethics in documentary.

Project development: research and fieldwork methods, conceptualization, treatment, narrative structuring, project presentation.

Strategies and methodologies to film people and situations as scenes.

Technical and aesthetical aspects that intervene in the filming process, image and sound editing in the documentary.

Follow-up of the implementation of practical exercises and tutorials on the semester projects.

Three aspects with different and complementary objectives are mentioned:
1) Most of the subject's theoretical classes are taught by both teachers simultaneously generating an active and reactive dynamic in the classroom which promotes greater integration in the teaching of the curriculum subjects, cooperation in the immediate resolution of questions, fostering opportunities for interaction in dialogue with the students.
2) The presentations of practical work developed and produced in the ambit of the course are open to the participation of teachers from other course subjects in the film BA.
3) The programming of films to complement the classes includes sessions with guest directors, which promotes the sharing of knowledge and experiences aimed to inspire the students' artistic practices.
