    Presentation

The undergraduate program in Civil Engineering was created in 1992 and was the first of its kind in non-state universities in Portugal. The course is currently structured according to the Bologna Declaration and has a normal duration of three years (six semesters, 180 ECTS). The study plan has fundamental subjects in Civil Engineering to prepare students to work in the various areas of activity. Namely, in the design, project management, and maintenance works, in line with good protection practices of the environment. Students are faced with a demanding education system that prioritizes the development of skills, to acquire the ability to learn independently and to act within the European Union or in other countries worldwide, such as Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). Our laboratory of Civil Engineering, as well as technical visits to new works and those undergoing rehabilitation, allow students to complete the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom. Graduates may apply to the Order of Engineers and Order of Technical Engineers after completing a professional internship and according to the rules established by it.
  • Admission Conditions

    Admission Conditions

Podem candidatar-se a este ciclo de estudos os que apresentem candidatura através do concurso institucional de acesso e tenham aprovação ao seguinte conjunto:

    • 07 Física e Química
    • 16 Matemática

Candidates may also apply via the regimes of institution/programme transfer or via Special Application, in accordance with the legal regulations in force (holders of higher education degree, holders of a Technological Specialization Course, holders of Professional Higher Technician Course or Over 23 years of Age). Candidates who meet the requirements defined in the International Student Statute can also apply.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The undergraduate program aims to train flexible and autonomous civil engineers, capable of working in any country of the European Union and worldwide dealing with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical built environment, including buildings, roads, and sewage systems, in line with good practices of environmental protection.
  • Career Opportunities

    Career Opportunities

The vocational opportunities are diverse and include the traditional areas of Construction, with a direct intervention in design, coordination, supervision and management, in addition to the fundamental presence in multidisciplinary work teams. The education received will endow the future graduate or Masters students with a comprehensive and specialized training, thus the knowledge obtained can be put into practice in project offices, construction companies and in State and local authority bodies and/or institutions, private national or international entities, specifically in the countries of the European Community and Lusophone countries.
  • Future Studies

    Future Studies

The 1st Cycle Course of Civil Engineering enables students to pursue their studies in the 2nd Cycle, which presents two specializations: (i) Construction and Structures, and (ii) Construction and Hydraulic.
  • Infrastructure and Equipment

    Infrastructure and Equipment

The master's program has access to the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and a dedicated office for students with computers. The current infrastructure, equipment, and software permit one to carry out experiments in the monitoring of structures, mechanics and material resistance, building materials, structural analysis, hydraulics, soil mechanics, and communication routes.
  • Research

    Research

The research activities are incorporated in the Civil Research Group (http://civilresearchgroup.ulusofona.pt) and are focused on four research areas: Structural Health Monitoring, Hygrothermal Behavior of Buildings, Construction Materials, and Sustainable Road Infrastructure Materials and Design. This group contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 and related SDGs 12 and 13, by promoting sustainable and resilient infrastructure through the introduction of new technologies, materials, and innovation intended to facilitate the management of civil engineering structures, considering the efficient use of resources and waste, and guarantee the safety and comfort of people.
  • Observations

    Observations

Students can carry out research funded by ongoing R&D projects and spend a short period in research centers located in the state members of the European Union, under the Erasmus Program. Students may also visit other research centers outside the European Union, under specific research projects (e.g., Brazil, United States, and United Kingdom).
