    It highlights the theoretical foundations of territorial management, supported by national legislation, starting by presenting the way in which, over time, several ancient civilizations were structured in the occupation of the territory.

    It presents the concepts, instruments and fundamental variables in spatial planning, with practical examples from the Portuguese case as a major reference.

    The Planning Process, Management Instruments and the Portuguese Management System since the 19th century are presented and discussed and critical reflection is encouraged, highlighting the importance of Public Participation.

    Fundamental discipline and intends that the Environmental Engineer understands that the decisions to be implemented in each location must be adjusted after all the fundamental variables have been evaluated, and that planning and organizing the territory is a task that requires very important decisions. and well sustained, the knowledge acquired previously being important for this.

    Reading documents (articles, news, internet pages) about cases of mismanagement of the territory.

    Discussion and reflection of real cases, in national or international territory.

    Institutional pages search (eg pages with varied information to obtain data on natural, anthropic and socio-economic biophysical variables, IGeoE, Direcção Geral do Território, etc.).

    Research, elaboration, presentation, and discussion of the work (s).

    Objectives

    The curricular unit of Land Management is intended that students can:

    Acquire knowledge and technical language that allows them to participate in multidisciplinary teams, understanding the rules and procedures of land manegement in Portugal.

    Know the importance of the environment in spatial planning.

    Know the main fundamental variables in spatial planning.

    Have a critical view of planning models.

    Know the main territorial management instruments.

    Valuing Public Participation in decision-making and encouraging the holding of Public Sessions for the participation of the population.

    Apply the concepts acquired in planning studies.

    Study, discuss and present case studies.

    Being able to work in a team.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The methodology used consists of the active method, placing the student at the centre of the learning process. Classes use a combined expository/interrogative method, using active learning methodologies: brainstorming, role play, etc. Case study analyses are included in the topics covered, encouraging peer discussion and problem-solving. This process will allow students to develop critical thinking, increasing their problem-solving skills. The following methodologies can be used: inverted classes, peer teaching and peer feedback.
