    The European Union project has been one of the most daring experiences as far as economy and policies are concerned. This curricular unit aims at describing how the process was shaped and progressed. It starts by highlighting the period between the two great wars. It gives relevance to the events initially shaping the process. It describes all the pertinent moments until the great crises of the XXI century. The main goal is to make sure the students critically evaluate the project, its political implications, and synergies.

    1. The evolution of the European integration process 1.1. The origins of the European project 1.2. The Second World War and the reorganization of Europe: - The military and political reorganization of Europe; - The reconstruction of European economies; - The Coal and Steel Community. 1.3. The construction of the European Economic Community - The economic recovery of the 1950s; - The European Economic Community; - Political developments of the 1960s; - The economic crisis of the seventies. 1.4. From the Economic Community to the European Union - The Single European Act; - The German unification; - The Maastricht Treaty. 1.5. The political and economic reorganization of the European Union: - From the Treaty of Amsterdam to the Treaty of Nice; - A Constitution for Europe; - Consequences of the treaty of Lisbon. 2. The crises of the 21st century: from the financial to the health crisis. Inflation and the ECB's policies 3. Europe, a system under construction.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    The construction of the European Union was one of the most important events of the twentieth century, politically, economically and culturally. This course aims to describe the evolution of this process. It begins by presenting the events that involved Europe between the two Great Wars; analyzes the beginning of the construction process; addresses its relevance during the bipolar order of the Cold War; and describes the relevant events that took place up to the financial, environmental, migratory and health crises of the new millennium. The ultimate goal is for students to understand and critically evaluate the evolution of the project over the several decades, its implications and its future challenges.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The classes will have specific aspects, according to the moment of the presentation of the contents, and they will be supported in updated bibliography and other elements developed by the professor. There will be moments of argumentative interaction, especially at the end of each topic. The use of primary documents will be advised. In terms of assessment, a continuous methodology will be privileged.

    The evaluation presupposes the accomplishment of 2 tests of evaluation of obligatory knowledge and presence and participation in the classes: 1st Test - 45% 2nd Test - 45% Attendance and participation in the classes - 10%
