    The unit of History of Art V and Visual Culture V aims to connect the contents of Art History I, II, III, IV and propose the student to study concrete cases related to the previous chronological period, included in the temporary or permanent collections of museums, foundations, galleries, other public or private spaces; provide conceptual frameworks that incorporate content that is intertextually addressed with the processes, habits, objects, images, and visual customs of various cultural domains; To know how to relate and cross the knowledge of the various historical periods, cultural contexts, processes and artistic results. It also provides historical and artistic knowledge, enriching its universe of references and developing organizational skills of a more informed discourse about his/her own individual artwork.

    Description of contents

    1 - Selected cases of modern and contemporary art in Portugal - approach from existing works in museums and foundations

    2 - Paradigmatic cases of modern and contemporary international art - frames, contexts, processes, materializations and practices.

    3 - Emblematic texts about art in the 20th century - approach from existing works in museums and foundations

    4 - Concepts of contemporary art:

    • Art and Community;
    • Archive and Document;
    • Body;
    • Feminism and Gender Issues;
    • Relational aesthetics;
    • Landscape and territory;
    • Postcolonialism.

    Objectives

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    The classes are interactive, with the intention of a dynamic relationship between the teacher and the student(s). The various topics are discussed in class.

    Students are encouraged to explore their personal interests in research work and also to share them in the classroom, so that, in dialogue with the teacher and colleagues, they can conjugate and articulate their aesthetic universes with the fundamental contents that should be acquired in this curricular unit.
    - In the middle of the semester, the student must deliver the first written work with an oral presentation. - End of the semester: deliverence of the second written work with oral presentation.

    Final grade:

    Attendance, participation - 10%

    Exercises of historical analysis of artistic works, project contemplating the practice of some techniques and other resources approached in the contents and in articulation with different periods of the History of Art - 90%
