In this curricular unit we proceed to an introduction to the history of Portuguese cinema from an archival perspective, considering in particular restored Portuguese films and Portuguese films that use archival images.

Objectives

Guided by the concepts and discourse that belong to the archival practice in cinema, we seek to raise and understand the state of the art regarding the Portuguese film history, whether considering specific institutional problems or considering concrete material cases. We also intend to highlight the modes of discovery. Thinking about the archival influence reflected in the films is another aim and, on the other hand, we will consider their role in the reworking of the notion of archive itself and, thereby, the rebuilding of the image of the history.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

An expository development of the questions will be made in each seminar, with illustrations, views, readings, field trips and debate. Under the guidance of the Professor, each participant in the seminar will be asked to organize one of the sessions, that will be the first 50% of the final grade. In addition, for the last 50%, each participant will write a paper about a specific and problematic case concerned by the curricular unit.
