Objectives
The objectives of this UC are the preparation of doctoral students for the practice of research in urban planning, exploring the analytical sense - theoretical and methodologically oriented - in the observation of urban facts and enabling them to carry out research work. Thus, according to the personal motivation for carrying out the research work, the objectives of this UC are: Prepare the PhD student for the definition of projects, and their limits; Train for the structuring conceptual construction; Systematize the work with the construction of theoretical and analytical models; Plan and develop the research project; Facing the challenges of research efficiently; Manage a research project - Time, resources, results. As a major objective, this UC aims to train the doctoral student to elaborate research work (from assembly to results) and to the dissemination of results obeying scientific theories and practices in the area of ¿¿urbanism.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The classes are in seminar format, with theoretical and practical components. Within the theoretical component, the PhD students are introduced to programmed topics usually delivered orally with PowerPoint support, which are made available on the online resources of the Programme. Within the practical component, the PhD students are introduced into the language and analysis of various issues involving urban planning, illustrated with different Portuguese, European and international examples. Both aiming at preparing the PhD students for a comprehensive reflection of the problems under discussion. In this sense more important than the simple transmission of knowledge, based on a critical reflection and oriented discussion, are granting analytical skills and investigative competences. The evaluation is performed continuously during the class and by the assessment elements established in the PhD Information for students (and at end of this document).
