Universidade Lusófona do Porto (ULP) has as a priority the solidification of higher education founded on consistent first cycles and the growth of the second cycles, considering that the conditions required for the opening of third cycles based on research and competitive academic programs are created today. In this sense, Communication and Activism Studies constitutes an original, innovative and non-existent offer in the panorama of communicational studies in Portugal, presenting a program with the capacity to develop a close articulation between critical and empirical theoretical reflection. It focuses on updating theoretical knowledge and the use of technological communicational tools, applying methodological research and action and intervention strategies to the field, with an important societal dimension of conceiving and carrying out projects of social and economic value. Differentiation from the existing offer and the fact that it constitutes a doctoral program in which research is articulated with intervention and social utility and the formation of a practical nature allows to face a potential for growth in demand by journalists, communication professionals, professionals in the third sector, citizens committed to social, civic, humanitarian, ecological, development and innovation causes, researchers and specialists in international cooperation programs. However, ULP's mission is to develop cultural, educational and teaching relationships in the Portuguese-speaking world, in Europe and in the world. In effect, this doctoral program has the potential to bring together different candidates from different academic backgrounds and scientific areas of training and from different cultural backgrounds (different countries). The doctoral program in Communication and Activism is strategic for the Universidade Lusófona do Porto (ULP), as the scientific area of training in Communication constitutes a domain of teaching and research consistent in the context of the institution. It makes possible the culmination of higher education held at FCAATI, which is oriented towards critical teaching of theoretical and practical knowledge, opening up new possibilities for the development of research applied to projects and the dynamization of R&D and innovation activities. The simultaneously critical, applied, technological and social intervention nature of the syllabus corresponds to the epistemological, disciplinary and practical view of training. This program is also fundamental within the scope of the Research Center for Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies - CICANT, which presents consistent research in the areas of "Media, society and literacies" and "Media art, creative industries and technologies". We also highlight the articulation of the doctorate with the MeLCi Lab - Media Literacy and Civic cultures Lab.
