Objectives

This course aims to train young students in an area of priority interest at national level, either in Europe or even worldwide. The food production sector in Portugal and the world faces complex challenges and needs trained professionals. The 7th Framework Programme recognizes the importance of building a European Knowledge-Based Bioeconomy, capable of responding to social and economic challenges, which include sustainable food production, emphasizing on the one hand the sustainable production and management of biological resources and on the other the importance of producer-consumer chain in the areas of food, health and well being. Enhance students' capacity for rigorous analysis, along with a critical spirit, for flexible and creative research and for innovate. It aims to be a factor of progress in this area of knowledge developing in students the entrepreneurial spirit that enables them to act as developers and creators of companies in the area.

Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

Students should develop specific skills that allow them to: plan, coordinate and implement activities to agricultural production at farm level to ensure the quantity and quality of production, hygiene and safety, environmental preservation and food security consumers; they should develop the ability to rigorous analysis, along with a critical, flexible and creative spirit to contribute to research and innovation, and to be a factor of progress and development in various sectors of society. Students should develop the ability to act as engineering practitioners and managers, contributing to the introduction of new models of management, which increase the productivity in their areas. Students will be oriented for scientific research in the area of agronomic engineering and enabled to monitor the evolution of knowledge and technology.
