In this day and age, Biotechnological Industries are increasingly diverse and multi-purpose and cover areas that range from Chemistry to Medicine. Biotechnology with its distinctly cross-disciplinary quality is an area of knowledge that has gained a considerable and mounting implementation in the industrial sector in a rapidly changing technological society. This feature allows it to make predominant contributions to varying degrees in other fields of knowledge, such as the development of technologies and methods of troubleshooting in the fields of Genetics, Biochemistry, Immunology, Enzymology, Food Industry, Clinical Analysis and Chemical Technology, Forensic and the Environment, among others.
This innovative course taught at the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technology (¿Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias¿), practically exclusive in Portugal, is updated each year with the inclusion in the syllabus of new curricular options, with a strong practical component, thereby intending to respond to the requirements of a national and international industry that is increasingly directed towards the development and application / implementation of new technologies.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
The curriculum includes three years of solid first-class training in the scope of the basic science, as well as an appropriate laboratory training in the field of biotechnological technology that is carefully taken into account in the various curricular units. The 3rd year, apart from allowing each student to choose his/her area of expertise will also enable them to be integrated in research projects conducted by faculty researchers.
The main objectives are:
Training in Genetic Engineering Techniques (the manipulation of micro-organisms, animal cells and plants in order to study the treatment of disease). Training in techniques currently used in gene therapy. Training in immunology (collection and processing of clinical samples, as well as carrying out techniques used in diagnosis and research). Development of new drugs. Conceptualization of processes to produce relevant molecules, compounds and materials based on biological matrices. Conceptualization of processes of bio-energy production. Training in high performance techniques for the screening and improvement of biocatalysts. Training in enzymatic techniques applied to the Food production such as the production of beer in the pilot plant at ULHT, and organic products. Training in techniques for supercritical extraction of plant at ULHT and use of essential oils in the production of cosmetics.
The Licentiate degree in Biotechnological Engineering enables the students to apply for Masters (2nd cycle) and postgraduate courses, specifically the Masters in Biotechnological Engineering and the Masters in the Production of Essential Oils with Industrial Purpose, as well as the Postgraduate courses in Clinical and Laboratory Genetics, Postgraduate course in Forensic Technology and Postgraduate course in Essential Oils, currently operating at ULHT.
Due to a comprehensive and diverse training, the Engineer Biotechnology has various vocational opportunities:
