The Licentiate degree in Civil Engineering at ULHT has followed the classical style of comprehensive teaching and is based on the teaching of mandatory subjects in this area of Science and Technology. It has also highlighted subjects such as Construction and Construction Management with the aim of steering licensees to this area of activity.
Because this Licentiate degree was the 1st to open in the civil area in private education establishments we want to continue to keep all the original objectives, whilst carrying out some innovations, particularly in the context of the accession to the Bologna Declaration, as well as the changes that Engineering Science have undergone due to the constant emergence of new materials and technologies, increase of user requirements and intense application of computational and laboratory tools in the professional context. During the adequacy to the Bologna process assumptions that guided the establishment of licentiate degree as a 1st cycle of comprehensive training, steered toward a basic knowledge of projects and construction management that basically promote the ability of future professionals were maintained.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
Major in Civil Engineering
As core competencies of the subjects designated as Majors in Civil Engineering (144 ECTS), we made an allowance for a broad-ranging training in the field of Civil Engineering, that will allow for a solid and consistent and uniform view of its fundamental principles, as well as the characteristics of the materials and technologies used, including the practical application of knowledge to solve problems, in addition to the ability to collaborate in management of project in the generic field of Civil Engineering.
Minor in Civil Engineering
The Minor in Civil Engineering (36 ECTS) aims to enable students who Majored in other scientific areas to acquire the basic skills and capabilities in this area and for this reason, students whose Major is Civil Engineering may choose their Minor from other scientific subjects. These students are, however, advised to select optional curricular units within the field of Civil Engineering listed in the framework of the subjects.
The 1st Cycle Course of Civil Engineering enables the students to pursue their studies in the 2nd Cycle, which presents two specializations, specifically, Specialization in Construction and Hydraulic & Specialization in Construction and Structures.
Bearing in mind the competencies above mentioned, the vocational opportunities are diverse and include the traditional areas of Construction, with a direct intervention in design, coordination, supervision and management, in addition to the fundamental presence in multidisciplinary work teams. The education received will endow the future graduate or Masters students with a comprehensive and specialized training, thus the knowledge obtained can be put into practice in project offices, construction companies and in State and local authority bodies and/or institutions, private national or international entities, specifically in the countries of the European Community and Lusophone countries.
