Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
Work with individuals, families, risk groups and others based on a multi-cultural point of view, and rooted on human rights and social justice; define intervention strategies, methodologies and techniques that are appropriate to the problems, target-populations, face-to-face contexts; articulate and mobilize institutional, technical and human resources in order to operationalize concrete answers for the citizens/users; communicational - with the subjects/recipients of the action and with the work teams; techniques that offer operational support and in techniques related to the instrumental devices of the profession.

Objectives
The 1st cycle is structured according to a standpoint that will enable the students, in a growing correlation between theory and practice, to pass from the theoretical level to the experience field work. Contact with institutions, other practicing agents, as well as the target-population occurs at privileged moments with pedagogical monitoring and supervision at ULHT and at the host institutions. Enable the students to: Intervene socially in different social and professional contexts; Envision the connection between theory and practice as a support for innovative action in Social Work; Identify, build and question intervention based on the theoretical-methodological, technical-operational and ethical-political elements of Social Work; Mobilize knowledge in order to attend to emerging issues; Articulate the practice of Social Services with other social practices, based on an interdisciplinary point of view; Conduct research and develop analyses of the reality where its work is carried out; Produce knowledge in the light of reality and professional practice.

Career Opportunities
Social services develops its technical, consulting and directing activities in institutions, services and projects within state organisms (Ministries and particularly in the Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity, Health, Justice, Education and Ministry of Interior , in institutions and services on a national and local level) and civil society (Private Institution of Social Solidarity, ¿Misericordia¿ (Portuguese charitable institution),Associations of Local Development and Human Rights, Companies in various lines of business, NGOs. Social workers currently present entrepreneurship initiatives and functions of technical consultancy and supervision in business and liberal regimes. The graduate students receive support to build their own businesses from ULHT¿s Department of International Relations, Employment and Entrepreneurship Internships.

Future Studies
Future Studies
The Licentiate degree in Social Work corresponds to the first level of higher education offered by ULHT in this area of knowledge. This course is followed by the Masters (2nd cycle) in "Social Policy and Social Work", in addition to various specializations in particular areas of "Social Gerontology", "Socio-Legal Intervention with Children and Young People in Danger" and social inclusion.
