The culture of sound has matured in the last few years. All over Europe and in the United States study cycles and research centres are being established with the objective of studying sound, its qualities and expressions.
ULHT and the School of Communication, Arts and Information Technology (SCAIT) (Escola de Comunicação, Artes e Tecnologias da Informação-ECATI) also wanted to join the golden years of sound, merging the technological, communication and artistic areas that have undergone an ongoing increase since the end of the last decade into the same licentiate degree.
The curricular structure of this new course is organized in such a way as to accommodate both old and new subjects, as well as unite the arts of sound to recording technologies, reproduction, production and sound synthesis.
Subjected in urban life to a territory ruled by sound and noise, this study cycle aims to contribute to an understanding of the object sound of in daily life, recovering from history that which Man owes to the sense of hearing.
This licentiate degree favours the place of skills, knowledge and innovation in a close association with the cultural industries, research and the media.

This study cycle accepts candidates who submit their application via the institutional entrance competition and have obtained a positive score in one of the following national entrance exams:

Candidates may also apply via the regimes of institution/programme transfer or via Special Application, in accordance with the legal regulations in force (holders of higher education degree, holders of a Technological Specialization Course, holders of Professional Higher Technician Course or Over 23 years of Age).
Candidates who meet the requirements defined in the International Student Statute can also apply.

Promote an elementary education with an interdisciplinary basis in broadband which incorporates the theoretical and technical knowledge applied in the areas of theory and models of communication, sound art, sound technologies, performance and audiovisual production; Match the profile and content of the curricular units to the characteristics and actual requirements of the national and European labour market of this industry, particularly in light the of permanent technological developments that this sector undergoes and the consequent professional upgrading this entails; Broaden the spectrum of training offered by the University in the field of cinema, video, communication, art and media, thus empowering an area of vocational and essential artistic creation such as sound; Create a scientifically sound and pedagogically well-articulated study plan that endows its recipients with the skills necessary to carry out their future professional practice and the possibility to further their scientific studies in more advanced study cycles; Strengthen the international dimension of the course and its respective integration in the European space of higher education.

Students and professionals interested in developing their studio creation and production skills, in audiovisual and cinema teams, for games and media, from radio to the internet.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
The licentiate degree in Science and Technology of Sound aims to endow the students with technical and theoretical knowledge, and an autonomy to carry out their professional practice and conduct research work in the following areas: Audio production and sound design, particularly in the context of audiovisual production, multimedia and entertainment;
Production of the arts of sound;
Audio post-production and sound design in audiovisual and multimedia projects, particularly in the context of new opportunities in the area of digital applications;
Research the relationship between sound and social and environmental structures.
It is also in a position to provide competencies, in a relationship of continuity, to students who show an interest in furthering their studies in the 2nd and 3rd cycles or other specialized courses.
Equipments and venues
The university has studios, rooms with image and sound projection equipment, and spaces equipped with hardware and software that allow students to develop their skills in sound production and editing.
The bachelor degree will permit students to apply for postgraduate studies, specifically PhD degrees.
Audio production and sound design in particular in the context of audiovisual and multimedia production and entertainment services, Audio post-production and sound design in audiovisual and multimedia projects for digital media; Sound equipment and technologies; Research in the areas of communication and arts of sound.
Student participation in CICANT (research center) projects, promoting teamwork and the development of important practices for future work in the business environment.
The classes are in daytime basis, from Monday to Friday.
Throughout the year, workshops and conferences are promoted with portuguese and foreign researchers and professionals, with these actions aimed at consolidating the practices of sound production, capture and distribution; as well as linking sound studies to different contents, from audiovisual to games.
