Syllabus
1. Concept and classification of International Organization (IO).
1.1. The importance of IOs: international cooperation and rapprochement between peoples.
3. The emergence of the League or Society of Nations (SdN). World War I and the Treaty of Versailles.
3.1. SdN's internal structure, operation and objectives.
4. The emergence of the United Nations (UN). The Second World War.
4.1. Internal structure, operation and objectives of the UN.
5. Regional international organizations:
5.1. The European Union (EU)
5.2. The internal structure, functioning and objectives of the EU.
5.3. The Organization of African Union (AU)
5.4. The internal structure, operation and objectives of the AU.
5.5. The Nato and the Warsaw Pact.
6. International organizations in the global order.
7. International Non-Governmental Organizations (OIG).
Objectives
Students should be able to critically understand the:
a) nature, objectives and functioning of international institutions.
b) history, nature and mode of operation of international institutions.
c) relationship between international institutions, nations, states and individuals.
d) regional, international and global scope of international institutions.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
The curricular unit adopts the methodology underlying the Social Sciences, that is, a theoretical-analytical methodology, combining theoretical expositions with debates on the history of international organizations and the relationship between the institutional forms and the historical context explaining their emergence. 2 Final written tests: 90%
Evaluation Rules:
Assessment comprises two alternative modalities: continuous assessment or assessment by examination.
Continuous assessment two final tests and participation in classes.
