The raison d'être of this curricular unit is to sensitize students to the importance of statistics (andquantitative methods). This is important for: systematize large amounts of information - through statistical indicators (immediate interpretation); describe and understand relationships between variables and identify the most important relationships to make better and faster decisions and make more informed judgments.

O programa desta unidade curricular está concebido de forma a que as matérias vão adquirindo complexidade à medida que o semestre vai decorrendo. Começa-se com as estatística descritiva (mais simples de compreender) e só depois vêem as estatísticas inferenciais (mais difíceis de compreender).O manuseamento das ferramentas informáticas seguem igual tratamento: apresentação do package, tratamentos elementares com as estatísticas descritivas e só depois as inferenciais. Utilizam-se igualmente revistas científicas da área para se elaborar as referências bibliográficas emconformidade com as normas da APA.

Objectives

At the end of this curricular unit students will: be able to identify the
usefulness of quantitative methods,identify statistics and discuss their use and
interpretation; operate the computer tools to process information and examine
the relationship between variables. 

Teaching methodologies and assessment

Methodology: Expository methodology initially followed by exercises. Students learn how to work with the IBM / SPSS statistical package and solve various exercises with this tool. There is also a group work that obliges the students to apply in each class statistical knowledge acquired in previous classes.

Evaluation: Continuous assessment: that implies presence in the classes - written test (70%) + groupwork presented in the classroom (30%)

or evaluation by final exam (100%).
