Presentation

To emphasize and deepen knowledge, about the own and transversal importance of International Relations - IR, namely in the European Studies. Acquire skills and competences that enable students to understand the importance of historical events in order to be able to face the challenges of a world of strong competitiveness and interdependence, at the middle and leadership levels, that today characterize the IR environment, and within it the States, Organizations and Multinational Enterprises move and take action. Deepen the most remarkable and decisive European events and interrelate with the USA and NATO strategic partners.

Syllabus

1. Methodology applied to UC. The weight of History and the IR.

2. It was of the Discoveries; the end of the Middle Ages. Leadership, Internationalization and Impact of Portugal in the World of RI, 1500.

3. The European Policy, XVI. Religious forces in confrontation.

    1. Treaty of Westphalia. National State; the principle of European Equilibrium.

4. Europe and the rise of England: Faithful in the Balance of Powers.

5. Age of Revolutions: American and French.

6. Great European breakthroughs. Napoleon: the Empire.

7. European hegemony and expansion. Consolidation of IR.

8. IIGM. Consequences. Rise and impact of Airpower in IR.

9. Cold War: division of Europe. Bipolar World.

    1. End of the European world.

    2. Impact of the new States. End of the Bipolar world.

10. The Aerospace Power in the IR. New type of Clashes and Threats.

11. Geopolitical, social and technological transformations: impact on IR. Consequences.

    1. Portugal and the CPLP. The story.

12. The European Union, From EEC to EU.

Objectives

To deepen structural skills and specialization, which allow students to decipher the importance of the great events that throughout the various Eras were decisive to modify the influence and impact of Western Europe on the History of communities. The aim was to interpret the historical past of Europe, its Diplomacy and International Relations - IR, in order to understand the present and to analyse its future evolution based on the behavioural past of the Communities, with a view to the good performance of its professional or academic activities in a globalized world of IR, of great complexity and of high competition. Demonstrate and understand the importance of Europe and deepen its structure and relationship with the USA and NATO. Demonstration of the validity of the foundations of the European Union, highlighting its Economic Power.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

Was adopted the continuous evaluation process  according to the criterion of classification in 2 Tests: 45% for the 1st Test and 45% for the 2nd, with the final addition of 10% regarding behaviour and attendance, being 100% = 20 values. Works and Examinations were also considered when appropriate. The methodology was aimed at promoting the debate about nuclear issues, clarifying doubts in specific concepts of this area of IRCMH, transposing Theory to the practical reality of international events, in a conjuncture of globalization, numerous crises and violent conflicts by the supremacy. To this end, models and practical demonstrations were used in exercises based on mathematical formulas, such as the interpretation of the Crisis Graph and its nuances, aiming at the application of the theory for the practice of the different international events that occurred in the past, in progress and that are are prospective in the future.
