Introduction and definition of quantitative methods in the scope of the degree course Types of data collection: continuous, periodic and occasional Notion of variable and scale of measurement Forms of presentation of data Notion of Universe, population and sample Representation and significance of a sample Types of samples: probabilistic and non-probabilistic Descriptive statistics Measures of location and position Measures of central tendency, non-central tendency and dispersion; measures of asymmetry and flatness; Frequencies. Association between variables: the concept of correlation Notion of statistical probability The choice of significance levels Parametric and non-parametric statistics Conditions of application of parametric statistics The chi-square test of independence and adjustment The statistical treatment of data using statistical pakage SPSS Introduction; the definition of variables in a database; the introduction and debugging
Objectives
At the end of this curricular unit, students should be aware of the usefulness of quantitative methods in their undergraduate studies, as an essential tool for the processing of large amounts of information, as well as the "tools" they can use for such processing.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
At the end of this curricular unit, students should: - Be aware of the importance of descriptive statistics, namely measures of central tendency, dispersion, asymmetry and flatness, as well as being able to interpret the associations between variables. - To master the concepts of representativeness and significance of a sample and the techniques and methods for obtaining it. - Understand the notion of "significant difference" and know the main statistical tests that can be used for their determination. - Acquire skills to know how to treat and present in a systematized way large amounts of information of a quantitative nature. - Acquire skills to know how to handle with some skill the statistical pakage IBM / SPSS.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
Methodology: In the classes an expository methodology is used, followed by exercises of practical application. Students learn how to work with the IBM / SPSS statistical package and solve various exercises with this tool. There is also a group work that obliges the students to apply in each class statistical knowledge seized in previous classes. We can affirm that the individual method and the method of group work are allied to the co-operative method. Assessment: Continuous assessment (written test + group work presented in the classroom) or evaluation by final exam.
