Syllabus
1- History of Portugal's accession to the Communities and to the European Union: a) Background; b) Treaty of Accession of Portugal and Spain; c) The implications for Portugal of successive amendments to the Treaties; (d) The Treaty of Lisbon. 2- The various Common Policies and their reflexes in Portugal: Economic, Social and Cultural Policies. 3- The Economic and Monetary Union - the difficulties of fulfilling Portugal's nominal convergence criteria. 4 The crisis in Europe and the consequences for Portugal. 5- The Cohesion Policy ¿Portugal and the Structural Funds. Critical analysis. 6- The European challenge and the Portuguese economy. 7- Portugal in the European Parliament. 8- The Europeanization of several areas of Portuguese politics. 7. Balance of membership in the various common policies. 8- Portugal in the European Union and the International System for the Protection of Human Rights. 9- The future of Portugal in the European Union.
Objectives
Acquire the theoretical and methodological approach appropriate to the knowledge, understanding and analysis of the genesis and evolution of the relations between the Communities, the European Union and Portugal; Identify, select and evaluate the sources of documentary and bibliographic information related to the CU.
Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired
Taking into account the objectives listed for this Course, in view of the fact that it is included in the course of European Studies and International Relations, the student acquires with this UC the possibility of developing the capacity to analyze critically the place and the role of Portugal in the European Union, as well as on the political, economic and social relationship it establishes with Portugal. On the other hand, it acquires preparation to respond to the requests that result from the relations between Portugal and the other countries of the European Union.
Teaching methodologies and assessment
According to "Bologna" the evaluation is continuous and is the result of the work carried out by the student who is the center of their learning. Within the continuous evaluation will be elements of weighting: 1 Written Written 45% 1 Written Test - 45% - Attendance and Participation (includes the possibility of doing small work in class) 10%.
