Statistics I

Presentation

This course will familiarize students with the basics of statistical thinking, language, and techniques.
Students should be able to recognize the usefulness and wide application of these methodologies to various contexts, particularly in their subject areas.
It is intended that students develop data analysis capabilities as well as acquire fundamental knowledge of probability theory and random variables.
It is intended that students develop their thinking skills, helping them to address and solve real practical problems in their area of study or in other contexts.

Syllabus

Exploratory Data Analysis

  • Introduction (sample, population).
  • One-dimensional analysis
  • Data Types
  • Frequency distribution and its graphical representation
  • Location measurements (mean, moda, median, quantiles)
  • Dispersion measures (sample amplitude, interquartile dispersion, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation)
  • Two-dimensional analysis
  • Scatter diagram
  • Coefficient of linear correlation
  • Simple linear regression

Probability

  • Algebra of Events
  • Probability Concepts
  • Kolmogorov's axiomatic and its consequences.
  • Conditioned probability.
  • Independent events.
  • Total probability theorem and Bayes theorem.

Random variables

  • One-dimensional random variables.
  • Functions of a random variable.
  • Parameters (location and dispersion).

Objectives

  • Understand the concepts of Descriptive Statistics and Inductive Statistics, identify them and apply them in practical cases.
  • Have knowledge about how to obtain, classify and analyze samples and how to do the respective statistical treatment.
  • Internalize the concepts of algebra of events.
  • Know the various concepts of probability and learn how to compute the probability of events.
  • Identify the types of random variables and study them according to their type.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The classes are theoretical-practical, the theoretical concepts are presented and then complemented with practical examples. Orientations are given for students' study and learning. For each topic, it is presented a set of exercises of application of the theoretical concepts to concrete problems for students to solve in class and the final resolution is presented.
The evaluation can be continuous or through final examination. Continuous valuation includes three tests with equal weighting, totaling 90% of the final grade, and 10% result of the commitment and participation shown during the semester. A student in a Normal regime is only able to be evaluated in continuous evaluation if present in at least 75% of the total classes. Students in the Worker-Student regime have the same  valuation instruments except in the compulsory attendance in class.
