Presentation
The main goal of Research Methods’ curricular unit is to offer students a set of competences that enable them to successfully develop scientific research work, namely in the fields of communication sciences and media arts. By the end of the semesters students should be able to:
Define their research interests;
Describe the process of research and its main stages and activities;
Explain the relationship between theory and research;
Describe and compare the main methods of qualitative research;
Propose a research project and justify the chosen theories and methodological approaches;
Evaluate and critique a research article, published in an academic journal;
Write an effective research proposal.

- Introducing the curricular unit and the practices of scientific research in communication sciences and media arts;
- Disciplinary research traditions, epistemologies and methodologies;
- Stages of research, defining research aims and objects;
- Literature review, state of the art, and methods of citation and referencing (APA and others);
- Formal cinematographic analysis;
- Discourse analysis and the dispositif;
- Discourse analysis and the cinematographic dispositif;
- Content analysis (qualitative and quantitative);
- Interviews and focus groups;
- Ethnographic methods and participant observation
- Psychoanalytic filmic analysis and its vicissitudes;
- Regimes of representation and otherness;
- Writing a research article: steps and approaches.

Objectives
Objectives
- By the end of the curricular unit, students are expected to be able to select the research methodologies better suited for their future research work and their dissertation;
- To be able to describe the main approaches to use in the context of qualitative research projects. This can include, for example, case studies, in-depth interviews, focus groups, etc.;
- To be able to analise and discuss a research article and the methodologies it uses, contextualizing their suitability for the proposed research object and aim;
- To be able to write a clear research proposal, suited for the aims of their PhD dissertation.

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Students are expected to read and discuss recommended texts, as well as engage in critical debate about the research projects the intend to develop.
The evaluation will consist of two moment: a critical review of a peer-reviewed research article (50%) and the definition of a research proposal for the dissertation/final project (50%).
