Apresentação
This is a blended learning course unit that is intended to help students make the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies in a confidente manner, by developing their academic research skills. Students will participate in thematic seminars where different aspects of the scientific research method applied to film studies will be analysed, scrutining the relationship between different branches of film theory and the specific materialities to the filmic object. At the end of this course unit students should be able to write a postgraduate essay or report of international academic standard.

Conteúdos Programáticos
Lessons will contain text-based and visual materials with which students can engage. The course unit is granted a high degree of academic coherence by focusing on methodologies specific to film studies: semiotics applied to film studies, content analysis, discourse analysis, analysis of audiovisual objects and psychoanalysis. The course unit will also confer students the possibility of getting acquainted with the major components of a qualitative approach to qualitative methods: participant observation, in-depth interviews and focus groups. This course unit is grounded in the following aspects: -Critical thinking -Seminar Skills -Using Research Materials -Planning and Structuring Essays
Objetivos

Metodologias de ensino e avaliação
Lessons will include Powerpoint, presentations and analysis of audiovisual materials and text. Students are expected to participate regularly in seminars, giving presentations, participating in discussions and utilising research materials. All students are required to write an original essay containing between 3000 to 6000 (not including footnotes).
