Online European Conference Psychology of Elite Sports Performance

Práticas da psicologia do treino e da performance aplicadas ao desporto de alto rendimento

Resumo

O objetivo da Conferência é dar a conhecer os aspetos práticos da psicologia do treino e da performance aplicadas ao desporto de alto rendimento, a partir da experiência de psicólogos de 13 países europeus internacionalmente reconhecidos, com um vasto curriculum no trabalho com atletas de alto rendimento.

O formato da Conferência inclui comunicações que resultam das experiências profissionais destes especialistas, designadamente na preparação olímpica, bem como workshops sobre técnicas e métodos de trabalho psicológico que utilizam no alto rendimento, e destina-se a treinadores, psicólogos, atletas e estudantes de psicologia e de ciências do desporto.

Este evento decorre da actividade do Forum of Applied Sport Psychology in Top Sport (FAST), a que pertencem os palestrantes, fundado em 2004 por iniciativa da Federação Europeia de Psicologia do Desporto (FEPSAC). É uma oportunidade única de aproveitar o contributo de tão elevado número de especialistas europeus no domínio do trabalho psicológico com atletas e treinadores de alto rendimento, em particular neste momento especial de preparação para os Jogos de Tóquio, perturbado pela pandemia do COVID-19.

  • Alberto Cei (University San Raffaele y Ceiconsulting, Italy)
    • Alberto Cei, psychologist and psychotherapist, teaches Sport Psychology and Psychology Applied to Football at the University of San Raffaele, Motor Science Dept, Roma, Italy and Psychology at the School of Sport of the Italian Olympic Committee. He attended at the last six Olympic Games working with athlete winners of 12 Olympic medals. Currently, he is a consultant in the following sports: shooting, tennis, table tennis, windsurf and football for young with intellectual disabilities with AS Roma. He wrote 15 books in sport psychology and performance development. Alberto is the editorial manager of International Journal of Sport Psychology, and former FEPSAC treasurer.
  • Anaëlle Malherbe (INSEP, France)
    • After 5 years in a private school of psychology, I specialized in psycho traumatic disorders and sport psychology. During my studies I worked in various places: sleeping disorders service, pain unit, adolescent department, psychiatric service and some sports clubs.
      As psychologist, I worked for 3 years in a Human Resources office with 2 main missions: recruitment, and career management / retraining.
      I worked also for 3 years in a service specialized in post-traumatic disorders and psycho-social risks. In this way, I helped people during Paris’s terrorist attacks, car accidents, assaults etc. I also helped people dealing with personal/ professional difficulties. At the same time, I began a private practice with adolescents, and adults.
      It is now more than 6 years that I work at INSEP. First, I was attached to the medical service doing clinical psychology and prevention with athletes. Currently, I’m attached to the performance service, working on the mental performance with French elite athletes, coaches and national teams. Currently, I especially work on the field with the Fencing team and the Rowing team for TOKYO 2020. I also work with some elite athletes in different sports (judo, weightlifting, archery, taekwondo, canoeing, kayaking, gym, swimming etc.). 
      I am also co-animator of a French network task force of psychologists, mental coaches and sport psychology researchers. The aim of this task force is to provide a national organization regarding psychological support to elite athletes and coaches. Currently, we are designing a national follow-up program regarding the development of mental and psychosocial competences of the athletes all along their sport career. We also work to develop and promote psychological topics to be included as   part of initial as well as continued training programs for coaches.

  • Boris Balent (Croatian Association of Sport Psychologist, Croatia)
    • Boris Balent currently works as a sport psychologist for top-level athletes and teams in Croatia. He has more than ten years experience working as a sport psychologist in football; building up a sport psychology support system at FC Dinamo Zagreb and FC Hajduk Split. Also, he was coordinator of psychological preparation at Croatian Football Federation and member of Medical team London 2012. Boris is the author of two sport psychology handbooks "Introduction to Sport Psychology: Handbook for coaches" and "Psychological knowledge and tools in sport practice". One of his main areas of interest is a Mindset in sport, which is the main topic of his doctoral thesis.
  • Chris Harwood (Sport Psychology of Loughborough University, England)
    • Chris is a Professor in Sport Psychology and the University Beacon lead for Sport and Exercise. He is also a Practitioner Sport Psychologist registered with the Health Care Professions Council and a Chartered Psychologist of the British Psychological Society.  
      His research interests and expertise lie in the psychosocial aspects of youth sport and athlete development with a particular focus on the socio-environmental influence of parents and coaches. He has particularly focused his applied research in the field of achievement motivation, sport parenting and through his work on the 5Cs approach (www.the5Cs.co.uk) to athlete development. As a scientist-practitioner, he is also noted for his work in professional practice and the study of factors related to the training and development of applied sport psychologists. 
      Chris teaches across a variety of modules in the School given his experience as a practitioner, but leads final year and postgraduate modules focused on applied sport psychology and professional practice. He has served as Chair of the Psychology Division for BASES since 2014 and is currently a Section Editor for the International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology and editorial board member for The Sport Psychologist, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, the Journal of Sport Psychology in Action and Qualitative Research in Sport, Exercise and Health. 
      As a practicing consultant in sport psychology, he has worked extensively with the Lawn Tennis Association, the Football Association, and several professional sporting bodies and clubs. For his contributions to applied sport psychology and sport science he has been awarded Fellowships of both AASP and BASES.
  • Daniel Birrer (Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen, Switzerland)
    • Daniel Birrer, PhD, is head of the sport psychology department of the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen (Switzerland). As a certified sport psychologist he provides sport psychology services to numerous top level athletes and coaches in various sports. He is a regular teacher at the Swiss Olympic coach education and he has been member of the Swiss Olympic Task Forces leading to the Olympic Games in 2004-2022. Daniels research interests are in the complex relationship between mood and performance, overtraining, the verification of the efficiency of mental training techniques and the effects of mindfulness based interventions in the sports domain. Currently he is a member of the AASP, ACBS, the Swiss Federation of Psychologists and of the Swiss Association of Sport Psychology. As a former track and field athlete (decathlon) he is now spending leisure time with outdoor sports such as beachvolleyball, mountainbike, freeriding and ski mountaineering.
  • Hafrún Kristjánsdóttir (University of Reykjavík, Iceland)
    • Dr. Hafrun Kristjánsdóttir is a psychologist, associate professor, and Chair of the Sports Science department of Reykjavík University. Her researches and publications have been mainly on mental health issues and psychological skills training. Kristjánsdóttir has been working with elite athletes and teams since 2005. She went as Team Iceland psychologist to the Rio and London Olympic games and will also be at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Kritjánsdóttir was a handball player herself and played for the Icelandic National Team for a few years.
  • Hardy Menkehorst (Mental Training & Coaching Centre, Holland)
    • Hardy Menkehorst, PhD, is a full-time private sports psychologist since 1986 and president of Mental Training & Coaching Center. Hardy is a former elite volleyball-player and volleyball coach. He worked as a sports psychologist with Olympic medal winners in men’s volleyball, men’s field hockey, speedskating, short track, sailing, etc. He’s involved in various sports and an invited consultant for business teams. Furthermore, he is currently a member of the NOC expert team Transition out of Sport and serves as a professor to the Master Program of Sport Physiotherapists. Hardy is the former president of the national organization of Sport Psychology in the Netherlands (VSPN).
  • Maria Psychountaky (University of Athens, Greece)
    • Maria Psychountaki is a psychologist and a sport psychologist working as an associate professor at the School of Physical Education and Sport Science and the Department of Psychology, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. She teaches in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs of studies. The courses of her responsibility are: "Developmental psychology", "Sport psychology" and "Exercise and mental health". 
      She is also the Director of the Motor Behavior and Sport Psychology Laboratory.
      She has graduated in both physical education and psychology and she got her PhD in sport psychology in 1998 at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens. 
      Since 1989 she has had experience in both clinical psychology and sport psychology as a consultant in high level individual and team sports athletes (Greek Sport federations and Cyprus Olympic Committee). Since 2000 she has provided on-site support for Greek and Cypriots athletes during Olympic and Commonwealth Games and European and World Championships. For 10 years she was the sport psychologist at Panathinakos FC Academy creating a psychological support program for young soccer players; collaborating with all involved: director, coaches, players and parents. Since 2017 she has had collaboration with the Sports Excellence program for young talented athletes’ preparation. 
      Her research work is in applied sport psychology topics (individual and team sports), in youth sports, and exercise and mental health issues. She has participated in two European research projects on physical activity and mental health [MENS project (2017-2018) and ASAL project (2019-2020)].
      She has been the editor into the Greek language of the textbook: Sport Psychology: Concepts & Applications (Cox, 2012, 7th ed.) and the co-editor into the Greek language of the textbooks: Foundations of Sport & Exercise Psychology (Weinberg & Gould, 2015, 6th ed.) and Physical Activity & Mental Health (Clow & Edmunds, 2014). 
      Furthermore, from 2000 to 2010 she has been the editor of the Journal of Sport Psychology in Greece. From 2000 to 2004 she has been the President of the Hellenic Society of Sport Psychology and from 2003 to 2007 she has been the Vice President of the European Society of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC). She is a member of various national and international societies of psychology and sport psychology.
  • Miquel Torregrossa (Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain)
    • Miquel Torregrossa is Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where he teaches cognitive psychology and sport psychology both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is in the coordinator of the PhD program in Health and Sport Psychology. He coordinated the Research Group in Sport and Exercise Psychology (GEPE) at the UAB where different national (e.g.,I+D) and international (e.g., Erasmus+) research projects are currently conducted. His research and applied work during the last years has focused both on the field of career transitions in sport and dual career.
  • Paul Wylleman (Free University of Brussels, Belgium; TeamNL-Olympic Committee of Netherlands)
    • Paul Wylleman, Ph.D. Psychology (clinical psychology), is full-professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, teaching sport psychology, high performance management and mental support for talented and elite athletes. His research and publications focus on athletic transitions, dual career management and sport psychology support services. Paul is head of the university department Topsport and Study and the research group Sport Psychology and Mental Support. He is past-President of the European Federation of Sport Psychology (FEPSAC). For the past 25 years Paul provided support to talented, elite and Olympic athletes and coaches in individual and team sports, providing on-site support at Davis/FedCup, European and World Championships as well Olympic Games. Finally, since 2013 Paul is member of the High Performance Team of TeamNL (Olympic Committee of the Netherlands NOC*NSF) where he manages a team of elite sport lifestyle coaches, sport/performance psychologists, counseling and clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists in order to provide psychological support services to Olympic and Paralympic athletes and coaches. He was the team psychologist of TeamNL at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and will also be at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
  • Pedro Teques (Polytechnic Institute of Maia, Portugal)
    • Pedro Teques is a lecturer in sport and exercise psychology at the Polytechnic Institute of Maia. He graduated in psychology with specialization in sport psychology. Then, he completed his MS and PhD in sport and exercise psychology at the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon. In 2009, he received the prize for the best students at the University of Lisbon, and one of his PhD studies received the prize in the Young Investigators competition at the annual congress of the Portuguese Society of Sport Psychology, in 2014. Pedro has authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed papers in the area of the psychosocial influences on sport performance. He is also a chartered psychologist by the Portuguese Psychologists Organization. For over a decade, he has consulted with coaches, parents, athletes and referees in a number of sports (e.g., football, handball, gymnastics, trap shooting). Currently he collaborates with the Referees' Committee of the Portuguese Football Federation.
  • Sidonio Serpa (Lusofona University, Portugal)
    • Sidónio Serpa is currently in charge of the Sport Psychology Center at the Lusofona University, in Lisbon, after having retired as Full Professor from the Faculty of Human Kinetics of the University of Lisbon where he worked for about 45 years. He is a former President of the International Society of Sport Psychology, and member of the European “Forum of Applied Sport Psychologists in Topsport-FAST” since the very beginning. Dr. Serpa has a degree in Physical Education and another one in Psychology. 
      He got his PhD with a thesis on Sport Psychology at the Faculty of Human Kinetics of the Technical University of Lisbon (currently, University of Lisbon) where he became Chair of Sport Psychology and coordinator of the Laboratory of Sport Psychology. Dr. Serpa has published at National and International level, and presented lectures in Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa. Additionally he has been Invited Professor in several universities in Europe and Macau, China. 
      Sidónio Serpa is a former gymnast and gymnastics coach, and has worked as a psychologist of top level athletes, medalists in World and European championships, as well as in Olympic Games. As a sport psychologist he was a member of the staff of the Portuguese Sailing Team in the Atlanta and Sydney Olympics. In 2009, he received from the Association of Applied Sport Psychology-AASP (USA) the “AASP Distinguished International Scholar Award” and from the Technical University of Lisbon the “Academic Merit Diploma”. FEPSAC honored him with the Ema Geron Award in 2019. In 2012 Dr. Serpa became Invited-Member of the Iberian-American Society of Sport Psychology. The Sports Secretary of the Portuguese Government nominated him as Ambassador for the Sports Ethics. 
  • Susana Reguela (Center of High Performance - CAR Barcelona, Spain)
    • Susana Regüela has a Ph.D. in Psychology, and is the manager of the Education Area at the Center of High Performance (CAR) in Barcelona, where athletes’ conviviality and education are supported. The mission of the Education Area is to facilitate the Athlete’s Integral Education (FIES Program) during their sport stay at the center and to ensure their follow-up after leaving the CAR. Susana defines the strategic management, vision and supervises the lifestyle, dual career, transitions and holistic development of the 380 yearly full-board and half-board athletes, and other external athletes from Spanish and Catalan Federations. She also manages the coordination of this area with coaches and interdisciplinary groups, considering that their activities are integrated in the sports career at short, mid and long terms.
      Susana advises dual career providers in order to improve their interventions with athletes. She also works with athletes during different transitions. Currently, she participates in the EU projects Gold in Education and Sport (GEES), Be a Winner In Sport, and Employment before and after athletic Retirement (B-WISER). With the REsults [WE_CARE] Program, and together with National care and development centers, the CAR Education Area supports elite athletes in balancing their sports and education/employment for the establishment of Dual Career structure in three Balkan Countries.
      Additionally, Susana has developed a program for the International Olympic Committee on time management, was a member of the group of experts in charge of the publications of the EU guidelines, and has a huge experience in implementing DC programs in Spain.
  • Tanja Kajtna (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia)
    • Tanja Kajtna, Ph. D. is a psychologist, employed at the Faculty of sport, University of Ljubljana. She teaches sport psychology related subjects, such as Sport psychology and Psychological preparation. She is a licensed sport psychologist with 20 years of experience in top sport and is the president of Section for sport psychology within the Slovene psychologists' association. She has been working with swimmers, alpine skiers, tennis players, martial arts athletes, paralympians… She attended Beijing 2008 Paralympic games and London 2012 Olympic Games as a sport psychologist for the Slovene national team. Her work combines classical approaches to sport psychology such as PST and CBT with ACT approaches.
  • Urban Johnson (University of Halmstad, Sweden)
    • Urban Johnson is Professor in Sport & Exercise Psychology at Halmstad University, Sweden. He has an elite-trainer certificate in handball, in which he has worked as a coach for many years. Besides playing handball and soccer at younger ages, he has a long history as a runner, cyclist and a triathlete. His main research focus is about psychological aspects of sports injury, prevention, rehabilitation and intervention. He also conducts research in areas such as health psychology and exercise science. Dr. Johnson has vast experience in working with applied sport psychology, especially for team sport athletes in elite contexts such as soccer, handball and volleyball. He has been a member of the Medical Committee at the Swedish Football Federation since 2001, and he was a member of the managing council of FEPSAC 2003-2011. Currently Dr. Johnson is a member of the scientific committee at the Swedish National Centre for Research in Sports.
