The students of the 1st Cycle in Biochemistry delivered at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias (ULHT) will benefit from a competent and experienced academic staff, from modern and functional infrastructures, in particular for laboratory training. They also take advantage of the possibility to be initiated to scientific research during the 1º Cycle within a Curricular Unit of Project. This new Biochemistry course embraces the challenge of forming a new generation of Biochemists who will be part of public institutions and companies. Students will also be stimulated during the course to become themselves entrepreneurs within their area of expertise. To reach this goal the Biochemistry course in ULHT is betting on a well developed laboratory training as well as on the immediate enrollment of students in research activities. The collaboration with a successful Portuguese company in the area of Biochemistry will decisively contribute to develop the real opportunities that exist in self-entrepreneurship in this area of knowledge.

  • Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

Knowledge, abilities and skills to be acquired

This BSc degree provides the chemical, physical and mathematical tools, indispensable for the understanding of mechanisms and establishment of models that explain diseases, environmental, forensic, nutritional and pharmacological problems, of practical utility for the Bachelor. The Bachelor will acquire in-depth expertise on the structure and functioning of the molecules of life and metabolic processes, enabling him/her to operate as a qualified professional, either independently or integrated into multidisciplinary teams. In addition, the knowledge on entrepreneurship will trigger the Bachelor´s capacity to develop practical applications useful to society, by using the concepts acquired during the BSc.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

The 1st Cycle in Biochemistry aims at transmitting knowledge and competences related with the chemistry of biomolecules and biological processes. This study cycle provides solid bases (both theoretical and practical) to start a professional career in Biochemistry or related areas. The main objectives can be stated as follows: - Teaching basic concepts in the realm of life sciences; - Teaching organic chemistry, analytical, inorganic and physical chemistry, relevant to the understanding of biological systems; - Provide practical knowledge and expertise, using up-to-date scientific equipment, in biochemical engineering, clinical biochemistry and genetic engineering; - Develop investigation competences in students; - Provide basic formation in the area of entrepreneurship will also be pivotal to enable the Bachelor to integrate a national or international career. The formation of the Bachelor can be complemented with a second cycle in different areas of specialization.
  • Reasons for joining

    Reasons for joining

    • Training in self-entrepreneurship in direct partnership with a company in the Biochemistry/Biotechnology area.
    • Dedicated and highly qualified academic staff.
    • Strong laboratory training component.
    • Incentive to participation in extracurricular and research activities.
    • Education aimed at training competent professionals to face the major scientific and social challenges in Biochemistry (biomaterials, bioenergy, sustainable development, health,...).
  • Career Opportunities

    Career Opportunities

The 1st Cycle in Biochemistry is training students for the most diversified careers: teaching and/or research in public or private institutions of the Portuguese or foreign Higher Education system, researchers or technicians in the pharmaceutical, biomedical or biotechnological industries (the latter including the vast agribusiness area), or in service companies (clinical analyses, biotechnology, biomedicine), development or participation with partners to the development of their own companies (¿startup¿) thanks to the formation in self-entrepreneurship. The competences that were developed during the study cycle (team work, project management, scientific writing, data analysis,...) will also permit the students to run for employment outside Biochemistry wherever these competences will be appreciated.
  • Future Studies

    Future Studies

The BSc degree allows access to post-graduate studies, namely 2nd cycles (Master's degrees), and then PhDs.
  • Infrastructure and Equipment

    Infrastructure and Equipment

The 1st Cycle in Biochemistry of Universidade Lusófona has access to many classrooms and auditoriums. Teaching laboratories include rooms dedicated to experimental work in Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, Microscopy, Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy, Microbiology, Chemistry, as well as fully equipped informatics rooms. The study cycle also has access to a research laboratory where the academic staff may develop their projects and direct trainees. The laboratories possess all the necessary equipment to teach classes in the various disciplines: computers, precision scales, spectrophotometers, microscopes, thermostatic baths, vacuum pumps, refrigerated centrifuges, fermentation reactors, incubators, thermal cyclers for PCR, epifluorescence microscope, electrophoresis kits, various electrodes, stoves, laminar flow benches, FPLC, aquariums and terrariums, as well as every piece of bench equipment and consumables.
  • Research

    Research

The research in Biochemistry will be added to the activities already carried out in Biology at the research laboratory. This will allow the students of the Department of Life Sciences to participate in data collection, data analysis, and adequate presentation of results both to the scientific community and to the general audience. The activities that are carried out are focused on research projects led by academic staff and on research interests of both teachers and students.
