Sociology of Family and Gender

Presentation

This Curricular Unit aims to:

• Provide knowledge of the various current perspectives on various topics in the field of family and gender sociology and their broad relationship with the various branches of knowledge of sociology;
• Contribute to the notion of the social and cultural character of the different modalities of family, marital and parental relations and their relationship with various institutions, namely the State;
• Provide knowledge of the relationships that are established between the main processes of social organization and the changes observed over time in families and the social attributions of gender roles within the family and society;
• To allow the knowledge of the relationship between the different contents of the UC and the evolution of society, always having as objective the relationship of each of the themes worked with the various policies (of diverse nature) implemented in Portugal and in Europe.

Syllabus

Scientific knowledge about the family; Family, social representations and common sense; Family theories: from classics to contemporaries: The perspective of the classics. The rupture of the 70s; Late century theories and proposals XX to the beginning of century. XXI; The sociology of the century family XXI The family in the past and in contemporary societies, Demographic indicators in Portugal and Europe; Social change and family dynamics; Social change and family dynamics in Portugal and Europe; Concepts of gender identity and role; Gender and Society in Portugal and Europe; The institutions of the Order of Gender; Gender change and continuity in the Portuguese and European context; State and Public Policy; Family, Economy and Work; Public agenda, political agenda and private order; Public policies and social change in Portugal and Europe; Family social policies in Portugal and Europe.

Objectives

It is intended that students:

• Obtain theoretical knowledge of family and gender sociology;
• Develop a sociological look at families, changes over time, diversity and complexity;
• Acquire knowledge of diverse perspectives on current issues and debates within the sociology of family and gender in contemporary societies;
• Understand the social and cultural character of the different modalities of family, marital and parental relations;
• Understand the notion of the relationships that are established between the main processes of social organization and the changes in families and social attributions of gender roles in the family and in society.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

Using the diversity of pedagogical supports, throughout the semester, it is sought that students get involved in the learning process through reflective debate on the reading of texts and the realization of research pre-projects carried out around one of the topics. syllabus.
The assessment is continuous, based on individual and group work:

• Analysis of a scientific article / Reading form (10%);
• 1st Assessment Paper - Exploratory Study Report on one of the themes associated with the syllabus (35%);
• 2nd Assessment Paper - Preliminary Research Project - development of the work developed in the Exploratory Study Report (35%);
• Oral presentation of the project (15%);
• Class participation (5%).
• Students who obtain a grade lower than 9.5% in the continuous assessment must take the final exam.

A ficha de leitura inclui os seguintes elementos:
- capa com identificação do aluno;
- ficha de leitura do texto (2 páginas);

- entrega de PPT  (os slides são constituídos por: capa com identificação do aluno (1 slide); resumo ficha de leitura do texto 1 (1 slide); resumo ficha de leitura do texto 2 (1 slide); resumo de comparação com um texto à escolha do aluno

A ficha de leitura e os PPTs serão avaliados os seguintes critérios:
- estrutura e formatação/apresentação do trabalho;
- qualidade do conteúdo e da respetiva escrita;
- criatividade no comentário pessoal aos textos.

 RECOMENDAÇÕES PARA O TRABALHO DE GRUPO

O processo de avaliação contínua implica a realização de um trabalho de grupo. O trabalho será realizado em grupos de, no máximo quatro alunos e consiste na elaboração de um pré-projeto de investigação. Trata-se de um elemento da avaliação que será trabalhado em todas as aulas teórico-práticas.  O trabalho deverá ser submetido, em pdf, no moodle na data indicada. O não cumprimento desta premissa implica a não apresentação do trabalho. A estrutura recomendada para o trabalho escrito e para os PPTs será disponibilizada no moodle.  

O trabalho de grupo inclui os seguintes elementos:

- Trabalho escrito. 10 a 15 páginas.

- Apresentação em PPTe posterior discussão.

O trabalho escrito inclui os elementos apresentados na estrutura disponibilizados no moodle

No trabalho escrito serão avaliados os seguintes critérios:
- estrutura e formatação/apresentação do trabalho de acordo com as normas estipuladas, e fornecidas no moodle, pelo docente;
- adequação ao processo de investigação em ciências sociais
- qualidade do conteúdo e da respetiva escrita;
- criatividade e pesquisa.
 
A PPT inclui os seguintes elementos:
- capa com identificação do grupo (1 slide);
- um ou dois slides por cada parte do trabalho.
Cada aluno responde a 1 ou 2 questões feitas pelos docentes. A discussão terá a duração máxima de 5 minutos. 1 a 2 slides por parte do trabalho.

Na apresentação serão avaliados os seguintes critérios:
- objetividade e capacidade de síntese;
- expressão oral/ linguagem não verbal;
- qualidade da resposta às perguntas colocadas pelo docente.
O docente poderá intervir na apresentação/discussão sempre que entender.
