Sociology of Leisure, the Body and Sports

Presentation

Sociology of Sport, including Body and Leisure issues, is a very wide sub-area of Sociology in terms of themes and approaches. In this course, we intend to offer the students a general view of the field, allowing, at the same time, to have a critical perspective of the area and its relations with Sociology as a whole. In this sense, it is of particular importance the historical exposition on the developments of the concepts of the sociology of sport, leisure and the body, as well as the development of the sports field.

Teaching methodologies and assessment

The classes will consist of seminars, with debate in the classroom, about the programmatic contents. Regularly, a reference text to be debated in the classroom. Based on the instruments acquired from the theoretical exposition, the students should choose and present a research assignment with a case study related to the contents developed in the course, in order to show the capacity to apply the acquired knowledge and to develop a reflection on a particular topic. In addition, students will also be asked to present and compare two texts, defined jointly between teacher and students, as a way of demonstrating reading maturity and critical thinking on topics of the course. The Evaluation will cover research assignment (45%), presentation of texts (30%) and a test (25%).
