Class Strenght of Materials

  • Presentation

    Presentation

The Strength of Materials Course is the first contact of the students with phenomena that occur inside structural elements (stresses and deformations). Therefore, Course starts with fundamental knowledge on the mechanical behavior of materials. Next, the fundamental concepts of Structural Mechanics are reviewed, such as the effects that the various internal forces have on the stresses in the cross sections of structural elements. The fundamental concepts of the Theory of Elasticity are also presented, including transformations of stresses and strains, Mohr's circle in two dimensions, and generalized Hooke's Law. Yield criteria for ductile materials are introduced and the plastic analysis of bars subjected to bending is presented in some detail (pushover analysis). The bases of the instability of columns are also presented.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

Provide students with the basic knowledge of Solid Mechanics, namely introduce the concepts of continuum, stress, strain and constitutive relations, geometric and physical linearity and superposition principle.

Additionally, it is intended to provide students with fundamental concepts of Strength of Materials and the theory of linear parts (axial force and bending moment), so that they can analyze and calculate the state of stress and deformation in linear structural elements subjected, alone or simultaneously, to axial load, bending moment, shear force and torsion.

Finally, it intends to introduce the plastic analysis of structures and the concept of instability.
