    The main objective of this course is to provide students with a wide range of knowledge in the field of Quality, namely on core topics about Quality Control. It is intended that students learn and apply statistical Quality Control techniques and methodologies to monitor and improve production and manufacturing processes. The course provides the opportunity for students to learn of how to solve problems in a structured way applying a set of quality tools, to analyse experimental in order to optimize process performance or product conformity, or even to measure and monitor the stability of a process and its capability to produce the desired outcome and comply with customer requirements.

    1. Quality tools:
      • 7 fundamental Quality tools.
      • 7 Quality planning and management tools.
      • Creativity tools.
    2. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.
    3. Hypothesis testing and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA):
      • Tests for 1 and 2 samples.
      • Tests for the mean.
      • Tests for the variance.
      • Testes for proportions.
      • One-way ANOVA.
      • Two-way ANOVA.
    4. Design of Experiments:
      • Complete Factorial Design with with various factors and 2 levels each.
      • Complete Factorial Design without replication.
      • Fraccional Factorial Design.
    5. Statistical Process Control:
      • Shewhart control charts for continuous variables.
      • Shewhart control charts for attributes.
      • Construction and analysis of control charts.
      • Common and special causes of variation.
      • Process capability studies.
    6. Six Sigma.
  • Objectives

    Objectives

    It is intended that student, when completing the "Quality Control" teaching unit, are able to demonstrate skills and competences that allow them to:

    • Understand the differences and complementarities between Quality planning, control and improvement.
    • Know the range of Quality tools, their applicability and how they can be articulated.
    • Recognize the importance of factual decision making and how the use of statistical methods can contribute to this aim.
    • Apply the methodologies of Experiment Design and understand their importance in reducing process variability.
    • Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) to distinguish common causes of variation from special causes of variation and know how to link the SPC methods with the performance of Capacity Studies.
    • Scope the applicability of the Six Sigma approach, including the DMAIC methodology (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control).
