    This curricular unit (CU) aims to initiate students in the thematic of pharmacologically active substances, introducing the concept of drug and its role in modifying the course of the physiological, pathological and homeostatic mechanisms of the human body. Drug classes especially related to nutrition, food, and metabolism will be focused.

    Historical perspective

    Introduction to Pharmacology: basic concepts, sources of information, cycle of medicines, research methodologies in experimental Pharmacology

    Routes of drug administration

    Pharmacokinetics: Absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs

    General mechanisms of drug action: receptor theory

    Drug classes

    -Cardiovascular apparatus pharmacology 

    -Pharmacology of the endocrine system

    -Gastrointestinal tract pharmacology

    -Vitamins and minerals

    -Drug-food interactions

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    In this curricular unit (CU), students should acquire basic knowledge in Pharmacology, essential for a proper training in Nutrition Sciences. In this context, students are expected to demonstrate knowledge on the terminology and basic concepts of Pharmacology and to describe the main mechanisms of drug action.

    Students are expected to understand the mechanisms of action and therapeutic uses of the drug classes especially related with nutrition, food, and metabolism. Students should also understand and identify the main interactions between drugs and foods, a topic of special interest for future professionals of Nutrition.

    The CU will also contribute to the development of transversal competences such as the ability to work in groups, the critical spirit, the ability to explain and communicate scientific topics, and the technical skills associated with laboratory work.

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    In Pharmacology I, innovative learning tools are used, such as interactive online games (individual and group) on the various topics covered in class, in order to increase students' interest and learning.
