    Introduction to Immunology and Innate Immunity

    • History of immunology, importance and basic concepts
    • Organs, cells, receptors and molecules fundamental to the functioning of the immune system
    • Innate immunity and inflammation:
      • The complement system
      • The inflammatory reaction and the establishment of the adaptive immune response

    Adaptive immunity

    • Antigen receptors and MHC
      • Organization and expression of lymphocyte receptor genes
      • The “Major Histocompatibility Complex” and antigen presentation
    • Development of T cells and B cells
    • Activation, differentiation and memory generation
    • Antibody- and cell-mediated immunity

    The immune system in health and disease

    • Allergies, hypersensitivities and chronic inflammation
    • Tolerance, autoimmunity and transplantation
    • Infectious diseases and vaccines

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    After attending this CU, the student should know the structure organization, and function of the immune system. Students will know how the immune system works in order to understand physiologic and pathologic immune responses. The knowledge of the interaction between innate and acquired immunity and regulation mechanisms are important steps to understanding reactions to antigens, namely drug antigens.

    The laboratory classes allow students to manipulate and analyze components of the immune system. Autonomy, organization, responsibility, and group cooperation are promoted in the laboratory.

  • Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Teaching methodologies and assessment

    Whenever possible, digital materials will be made available to support the master classes, and forum discussion channels will be opened about their contents.
    A micro-congress will be prepared with the students, with the presentation and discussion of a scientific poster created by them, based on top publications in the field of immunology. A key to developing critical thinking about the latest developments in the field of study.
