    This curricular unit aims to provide students with basic training on the global diversity of vertebrate organisms on the planet, cementing the previously acquired knowledge about this biological group. This course explores the comparative approach of the different anatomical systems existing in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Some aspects of vertebrate biology such as evolution, speciation, locomotion, coloring, thermal adaptations, communication and behavior will be discussed. This is a support discipline for other topics to be addressed in the biology course such as physiology, ecology or conservation biology.

    Syllabus

     

    - Origin of Chordata; diversity, evolution and vertebrate classification

     - Fish classes: Myxini , Cephalospidomorphi (lampreys) and Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish)

    - Bony fishes (class Osteichthyes), fish¿ structural and functional adaptations; Portuguese ichthyofauna

     - Amphibians (class Amphibia); origin, evolution and diversity; Iberian amphibians;

    - Reptiles (class Reptilia), origin and adaptive radiation of reptiles, crocodiles and other archeosaura; current reptiles: turtles, snakes and lizards, Iberian reptiles, ecology and behavior

     - Birds (class Aves); origin and phylogenetic relationships, adaptations and major systems; Iberian birds, ecology and behavior;

    - Mammals (class Mammalia); characteristics and diversity, origin and evolution of mammals, functional and structural adaptations of mammals; Iberian mammals, ecology and behavior

    - Conservation of vertebrates (emphasis on the Iberian fauna)

    Objectives

    It is intended that students:

    Understand the evolutionary relationships between major groups of vertebrates and the processes that lead to speciation;

    - Acquire skills to identify the main orders of Iberian groups of actual vertebrates;

    - Be familiar with the mechanisms of locomotion, with the structure and functioning of anatomo-phisiological  systems from the various groups of vertebrates

    -Become familiar with the processes and cycles involved in the ecology of vertebrate populations;

    - Become familiar with the process of scientific research and investigation through discussion of scientific papers along with teamwork involvement
