Resume

Teresa Mendes Flores is an expert in photography and film history, optical media theories and archaeologies, visual culture, and semiotics. She is a contracted researcher at ICNOVA, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she obtained her PhD in Communication Sciences (2010). Her dissertation examined the relationship between photography and space, specifically looking at the imagination of top views in Western visual culture. She authored two books and co-edited another two and four journal issues. Teresa has signed 26 book chapters and 22 papers in esteemed journals, including Photography & Culture, Early Popular Visual Culture, and Comunicação e Sociedade. As part of her work at ICNOVA, she led the research group on "Culture, Mediation&Arts" from 2019 to 2023 and co-edits the academic journal RCL- Revista de Comunicação e Linguagens since 2018. She is now the vice-coordinator of the research group. With extensive experience in co-directing and organising conferences, she plays a pivotal role in The International Conference on the Counter Image and The International Conference on Photography Studies, both of which are now in their third editions. Teresa was the principal investigator of the Photo Impulse research project, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (2018-2022). The project examined geographic and anthropological expeditions' photographic and film archives produced in the former Portuguese colonies. Drawing on a Visual Culture approach, the project analysed the relationship between visual codes, representation regimes, and domination regimes. To fully understand colonial visuality, including colonial science, the project's team has given great importance to historical studies, post-colonial and decolonial theories, gender studies, black and indigenous studies, and memory studies. This initiative aimed to contribute towards historical and cultural reparation while encouraging discussions among various communities and cultural backgrounds. Teresa was one of the curators for the project's final exhibition, Photo Impulse: (Dis)placing the Colonial Archive at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon from December 21, 2022, to July 14, 2024. The exhibition used a collaborative curatorship and has been an important forum to raise questions concerning issues of racism, gender and class and contributing to unveiling hidden perspectives on Portuguese colonisation.
