Resume

Jónatas Miguel de Almeida Valença is Researcher at CERIS - Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, and his interests focus on Advanced Structural Health Monitoring and Characterization; Cutting-edge Methods for Experimental Monitoring; Strengthening, Rehabilitation and Conservation of Structures and Built Heritage. In all these fields he developed tools based on processing of multispectral images and computer vision. Jónatas Valença is (was) member of the following technical-scientific associations: ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing); IABMAS (International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety); CIPA (The International Committee for Documentation of Cultural Heritage); GPBE (Portuguese Group of Structural Concrete); and ASCP (Portuguese Association for Bridges Security and Conservation). He is (was) principal investigator or member in projects funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), ANI (former Adi), both Portuguese governmental institution, and directly funded by the industry. Author of more than 70 scientific papers published in international and national journals and conferences which, combined with seminars/ workshops, results in more than 50 oral communications in research and technical events. Additionally, is reviewer of international journals, member of juries in theses examinations, and supervisor of PhD and MSc students. Jónatas Valença was Assistant Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon (2016/17); Assistant and Lecture at Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra (2008-2014), and Assistant Lecture at Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (2006/2007). In all these Institutions he has developed educational activity in MSc, BSc and Technological Specialisation Courses, in the fields of Structural Engineering. Additionally, he already performed lectures by invitation at University of Coimbra and University of Lisbon, both in Portugal, and at Universidad Politècnica de València, Spain, Chitkara University, India, and Technical University of Munich, Germany. As technical consultant, he has participated in dozens specialized consulting studies, with emphasis on monitoring of bridges load tests and mechanical/structural characterization and diagnosis of structures pathology. Furthermore, he was Founder Partner of SBE - Science-Based Engineering (2012-2013), spin-off of the Instituto Pedro Nunes in Coimbra, where he was the Head of the Assessment and Monitoring of Structures sector.
