This curricular unit aims at the critical study of the State, Law and Security trichotomy at an international, European and national level. To this end, resorting to prestigious international authors, we will analyze the evolution of the State model, the development of public institutions, namely the role of Public Administration in the better or worse functioning of society, which leads to the study of Public Security Policies.
Since Law is the normative instrument, justification and limit of the performance of the public power, the role of Law in the current context of security of society and the State will be studied.
Finally, the Freedom/Security dichotomy, the limits of proportionality and adequacy in the performance of the administrative police and the Courts themselves, as well as the role of Private Security in the citizens' sense of security.

Objectives
It is intended that the student understands and is able to explain the historical aspects that were at the origin of the current model of the Rule of Law and how the Freedom/Security balance develops. Additionally, they should know how to identify and explain the main currents in the fields of Security and Justice and, for that, know the Fundamental Principles of Law that are inherent to them, as well as know how to identify the weaknesses of the different models. They must acquire knowledge and skills that allow them to relate the theoretical concepts learned with reality, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of the main frameworks of the sector and its technical aspects, developing a critical awareness.
