Miriam Da Silva Pina

Resume

Miriam Pina is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto since 2008, and at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa since 2025. She is a Ph.D. candidate at the École des Sciences Criminelles of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) since March 2019 and holds a Master’s Degree in Criminology and Security from the same university, awarded with an honorable mention Summa Cum Laude. She also holds a degree in Psychology, with a specialization in the Psychology of Deviant Behavior, from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto. She is currently a lecturer and Internship Coordinator for the undergraduate degree in Criminology at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto and serves as Scientific Coordinator of the Advanced Postgraduate Specialization in Victimology at the Portuguese Institute of Psychology (INSPSIC). Since 2020, she has been a doctoral fellow funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). In 2024, she co-edited two international volumes in the field of victimology — Modern Insights and Strategies in Victimology and Investigating and Combating Gender-Related Victimization — published by IGI Global. In February 2022, she received the Pedagogical Innovation Award from the University of Porto. Her scientific output includes several publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and active participation in competitive research projects. Between 2002 and 2005, she worked as a Clinical Psychologist at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, at the Gabinete de Estudos e Atendimento a Agressores e Vítimas (GEAV), where she was involved in the assessment and intervention with victims and offenders. She later worked in Swiss penitentiary institutions, namely at the Penitentiary Establishments of La Plaine de l’Orbe (Canton of Vaud), where she was responsible for inmate assessment and recidivism risk evaluation. As a researcher, she has collaborated with the Universities of Porto, Lausanne, and Zurich on several national and international projects, including the Effects of Drug Substitution Programs on Offending among Drug-Addicts project, which resulted in a Campbell Collaboration meta-analysis. Since 2013, she has collaborated with UMAR in the training of professionals working in the field of domestic violence, and since 2016, she has been involved with CRIAP Institute in the Victim Support Technician Course. She is a member of the Working Group on Prison Life and Effects of Imprisonment of the European Society of Criminology, a member of the European Society of Criminology (ESC), the International Association of French-Speaking Criminology (AICLF), and the Portuguese Association of Criminology (AICLP). She also serves on the Supervisory Board of APAV – Portuguese Victim Support Association and is a registered member of the Portuguese Psychologists Association (license no. 007961). She is currently affiliated with the Interdisciplinary Center for Crime, Justice and Security at the Faculty of Law of the University of Porto and with the Francisco Suárez Research Center at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa.
