Resume

Teresa Sofia Castro is a Professor and Research Assistant at Universidade Lusófona (she won 1st place in the Communication area in the FCT CEEC 2022). She is a researcher interested in children's (0-18) digital lives (uses, risks, skills, and opportunities), digital parenting and mediation, innovative methodologies and participatory-action research. She has experience doing research with children and families with different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, and settings(home, school, Educational Centres, Programa Escolhas). She did a Post-Doc (funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology-FCT), with the supervision of Cristina Ponte (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and Emma Bond (University of Suffolk, UK), in the field of Communication Sciences - Media and Cultural Studies (2017-2022). The longitudinal study iTec Families has the participation of families with different social, and living conditions based in Portugal and the UK. She holds a European PhD in Sciences of Education, Educational Technology (University of Minho). The research project, funded by FCT, resulted in the thesis: "It's a complicated situation. Harm in everyday experiences with technology. A qualitative study with school-aged children". Her analysis draws on contributions from the sociology of risk, childhood studies, science and technology, and aspects of critical criminology (zemiology). Teresa holds a Master's in Childhood Studies, specialising in Information and Communication Technologies (University of Minho), and a degree in Philosophy and Humanities (Portuguese Catholic University). She is an integrated researcher at ICNOVA - NOVA Communication Institute; a member of the research network EU Kids Online (Portugal); and was a member of the COST Action DigiLitEY: The Digital Literacy and Multimodal Practices of Young Children until its end in 2019. Aware of the importance of contributing to children's and young people's digital literacies, her research has been aligned with this goal: in her Post-doc, helping families scaffolding digital competencies; workshops training primary school/pre-school teachers to work off/online citizenship using the digital platform +Citizenship (a collaboration involving national city halls and Lusoinfo Multimédia, Maia, Portugal), since 2015; collaborating with Portuguese Safer Internet Centre; Child Support Institute (IAC) in the writing of books for children and families, on the safe use of digital technologies (Alerta Premika! Online risk detected); workshops with young offenders about digital citizenship and digital rights in the national project: Dici-Educa- Educational centres with digital and civic competences (Academies of Knowledge, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, coordinated by Maria José Brites, Universidade Lusófona - COFAC and CICANT); collaborating in the European Project ySKILLS - funding AH2020 (coordinated in Portugal by Cristina Ponte) led by the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. And since January 2022 she is the Co-Pi of the FCT-funded project: Youth, News, and Digital Citizenship (YouNDigital), with M. J. Brites as PI. She did three international research internships (UK-University of Suffolk, Belgium - KU Leuven, and Italy - Università Cattolica of Milan) and has dozens of (inter)national publications, in peer-reviewed and indexed journals, on the themes she investigates (including, digital uses, abuses and harms, digital citizenship and digital literacies, online violence, digital contents on pro-anorexia and self-harming produced by children, digital parenting and digital families, research and ethics ). From 2019 to 2022 she was appointed Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Suffolk.
