Class Steel and composite structures

  • Presentation

    Presentation

    The course unit Steel and Composite Structures introduces the fundamental principles governing the analysis and design of steel and composite structures. Scientific and technical concepts related to structural modelling, analysis, and design are presented in accordance with the Eurocodes. Particular emphasis is placed on structural analysis, verification of member resistance under applied actions and instability phenomena, and the design of steel connections. In addition, students are introduced to the modelling and assessment of wind actions on structures. The knowledge and skills developed in this course are essential for the professional practice of civil engineers, both in structural design and in construction-related activities such as site supervision, project management, and quality control.

  • Objectives

    Objectives

    This course unit aims to provide fundamental training in the design of steel structures, with a focus on structural modelling, analysis, and safety verification. Upon successful completion of this course unit, students should be able to: Determine and evaluate actions for Ultimate and Serviceability Limit States. Understand the fundamental concepts governing the behaviour of steel structures. Perform structural analyses and assess the need to consider geometric imperfections and second-order effects. Classify and design cross-sections in accordance with the relevant code provisions. Verify the resistance of steel members subjected to different combinations of internal forces. Assess the stability and buckling resistance of steel members. Design bolted and welded connections. Analyse and design basic steel-concrete composite members. Assess the fire resistance of steel members using simplified design methods.
  • Teaching methodologies

    Teaching methodologies

    The course adopts a project-based learning approach, integrating theoretical concepts with practical design applications. Students are encouraged to develop engineering judgement through the use of professional structural analysis software, collaborative project work, and independent problem-solving activities. Digital learning resources, including lecture notes, worked examples, design guides, and software-based demonstrations, are used ot enhance student engagement and facilitate autonomous learning.

  • Assessment

    Assessment

    • O Projeto será desenvolvido em grupos de até quatro alunos.
    • O Projeto e os Trabalhos Práticos são avaliados com base nos elementos entregues (49%) e na respetiva discussão oral (51%).

    Não serão corrigidos testes, exames ou trabalhos de alunos que não estejam inscritos na UC.

    A Classificação Final (CF) é calculada através da seguinte expressão:

    CF = 50% x CTP + 30% x P + 20% x (TP1 + TP2 + TP3)/3

    em que:
    CTP - Classificação na Componente Teórico-Prática;
    P - Classificação no Projeto;
    TPi - Classificação no Trabalho Prático i.

    Serão aprovados os alunos que obtenham uma classificação final igual ou superior a 10 valores.

    O Exame de Recurso (ER) consiste na realização de uma prova escrita. Para cada aluno, será considerada a situação mais favorável entre:

    • a classificação obtida no exame, correspondendo a 100% da classificação final;
    • a substituição da classificação da Componente Teórico-Prática pela classificação do exame, mantendo-se as restantes componentes de avaliação, conforme a expressão indicada acima.

    Em qualquer momento de avaliação, e sempre que considerado necessário pelos docentes, o aluno poderá ser chamado a prestar uma prova oral destinada à confirmação da classificação obtida. A não comparência injustificada implica a anulação da respetiva avaliação.
