The scope of Fluid Mechanics is wide (Earth's surface enveloped by air and water) finding applications in traditional areas of engineering (mechanical, chemical, civl) and others such as energy and environment, aerospace, bioengineering. Practical applications involving the analysis and design of systems that require a good understanding of fluid mechanics: aerodynamics (aeronautics and aerospace, automotive), distribution networks (water, oil, natural gas), air conditioning and ventilation, biomedical
engineering ( breathing and blood circulation), etc. In the scope of a 1st cycle on Industrial engineering, is intended that the student will reinforce basic knowledge about static and dynamic of fluids and main theoretical approachs to study this subjects. This is relevant to develop knowledge in other specific ucs related to hydraulics and other processes in the scope of this curricular units.

Objectives
Objectives
The main objetiv of this uc is an introdutory approach to fluid mechanics, pipe flows and hydraulics.
Specific topics are addressed:
-Understand the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics
-Analyze fluid behavior at rest and flow
-Apply dimensional analysis to engineering problem analysis
-Know methods and instruments of measurement in Fluid Mechanics, namely pressure, velocity
and flow
-Analyze and solve simple Fluid Mechanics problems in Engineering
The student should be able to:
-Characterize fluids from their properties
-Calculate pressure forces on immersed surfaces
-Apply Bernoulli's equation to ideal flows and understand its limitations
-Measure pressure, velocity and flow
-Determine forces in flows (conservation of momentum)
-Solve modeling and experimentation issues based on similarity laws
-Calculate the power of turbines, pumps and fans
-Calculate pressure drop and size fluid transport facilities
-Determine drag and lift forces

Teaching methodologies and assessment
Teaching methodologies and assessment
During theoretical classes, in addition to the fundamental concepts and relationships discussed in each chapter, some "Case Questions" are analyzed using real systems and focusing the attention on solving problems methodologies and using practical issues related to the concepts or relationships discussed. In the lectures that end each chapter or sub-chapter, students are challenged to answer a conceptual quiz, focused on the understanding of the basic concepts. Regarding the practical application and mastery of the problem-solving process, students are challenged to solve in class a known set of proposed exercises and those not solved in class due to different execution speeds of the students, can be solved outside classes and submitted for correction. At the beginning of the semester, students will be divided into groups to research about a laboratory project. This work is developed during all semester, integrating the knowledge that is being taught
